Head beekeeper, Australian Parliament. Environmental scientist, cat lover, Japanese jujitsu black belt. Kinda nerdy.
Urban Beekeeping - The City as a Hive in bookshops now!
Drilling escapes from kesa gatame (scarf hold). That is me being an insufferable jerk to people who can't stop me from escaping 😂🤣

Squizzy being extra cute and cuddly tonight. #cats

Bit of a pinch-me moment today, my book is number 1 best-seller in town planning!
I wrote it to encourage a more bee-friendly approach to urban design, so really loving seeing it at the top of this list! #Booksky

How you know that you at a concert in Australia:
Metallica is shredding the stage, but someone still has the cricket on so they can check scores 😂🤣🏏

Best way to start Australian Pollinator week - teaching people how to care for #bees!

Happy to see the Parliament house beehives all absolutely cranking today! The #bees are feasting on a Red Box, Callistemon and White Clover blossom. @flowhive.bsky.social

The native stingless #bees returned to the Australian Parliament a few weeks ago, and have already found a good source of pollen judging by the yellow on their legs!

Old Parliament rose gardens are incredible right now - not just the colours, but also the beautiful perfume!

The native stingless #bees have returned to Parliament House!
After a tough couple of seasons, it is wonderful to have them back at our national Parliament, just as spring warms up!

My lunchtime walk hit differently today - showing off the Parliament beehives to the Agrifutures Rural Womens Award Alumni, who are in town for the awards tonight.
An incredible group of business leaders, and a surprising number are keen beekeepers!

The flow hives in particular are doing really well - build a lot of honey in the top supers.

Mid-spring at Parliament and the #bees are loving it! Great start to the season.

Love doing tours like this - showing people the inner workings of a Slovenian AZ #beehive as part of the 'Windows to the world' embassy open day.
There were 60+ people on the tours, and for many tgis was the first time they had seen #bees up close (they all loved it, especially the kids).

In case you were under the impression that female #judo players are any more polite or refined than the blokes. 😂🤣

The swarm is foraging strongly today - probably quite hungry as they set up shop, so I gave them some sugar water to help them along.
Really gentle #bees, very happy with this lot!

One of my colleagues specialises in #bee swarm collection, and has been run off his feet lately!
He dropped this one off earlier today - settling nicely into the nucleus box!

First day of the spring Beekeeping for Beginners course done! A great group of trainees, and the #bees behaved themselves wonderfully!

Panels, battery and home inverter now fully installed, we are basically off-grid!
Fully electrified house, electric car so we don't have to pay for power or fuel. Thanks #renewables!
Really fun checking the app to watch the power generation during the day!

The Parliament #bees loving spring so far - so much pollen coming in!

I have been putting drone frames in all of my hives to prepare, and it is great so far!
No varroa (yet) but they are right on the doorstep, and this sets us up for control.

The stunning River Peppermint (Eucalyptus elata) in full bloom in front of Parliament House.
Fantastic nectar flow heading into the beehives right now!

Dropping off some new bee colonies to an orchard, and the sunset was so good I had to pull over and just watch it for a bit.
