I had wondered if it wasn’t the case that network effects had driven both bigger winners (Taylor Swift, for example) and a longer tail (every tiny niche).

Now I wonder if there’s any systematic method to find and explore these niches, as I’m mostly not gratified by more mainstream pop genres.

The post was missing when I went looking for it 🤷🏻‍♂️ I retyped it:

2. There was a dominant pop culture and a counter-culture. For example, “normies” listened to New Kids on the Block, Madonna, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, &c, while “alternative” people listened to The Cure, Jane's Addiction, Pixies, &c.

Are there counter-culture(s) now? What are the genres?

Speaking of these niches, would you take a look at question 2 and give me your take on that one? 🙏🏻

Here, give these questions a go

1. I’m to understand that most people currently take what’s streamed and invest relatively little effort in discovering new music. Would you say that’s broadly true? Also: what are the main ways people learn about new music? It seems like songs get popular by being used in TikTok videos, for example

I’m very much GenX, and so grew up in a culture/media environment where musical preferences were part of identity/subculture affiliation. There was status in knowing about artists, making good mix tapes, &c. In that frame, I’d like to learn about the ways young people relate to music today.
