One of the tragedies of the Aralqum is how cool it looks in photos…

We made a pilgrimage to the Aral Desert, which was still the world’s fourth largest inland sea in 1970. They say the future is here but unevenly distributed, and this is the best proxy I’ve seen for the future we are currently making.

Staying in the Ichan-Qаl’а of Khiva, the historical capital of the Khorazm region.

This is where (by most accounts) Al-Khwarizmi (“algorithm”, “algebra”, numerals) originated before settling at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.

I wonder from time to time whether the popularity of Bratz dolls in the early 2000s led directly to the highly synthetic aesthetic preferred by many young women today 🤔

Saw ‘How a Spiral Works’ at the Berlin Circus Festival last night. It was a superb, deeply emotional performance, and the first time a dance piece has made me spontaneously weep.

Flawless performance from Morcheeba at the Opera Leśna (“Forest Opera”) in Sopot last night. I last saw them around 25 years ago, but Skye Edwards hasn’t aged a day and Ross Godfrey remains an exceptional and highly underrated guitarist.

One can generate nice patterns using only XOR, like the 2D pattern on the left:

(doseq [x (range w)]
(doseq [y (range h)]
(when (not (zero? (mod (bit-xor x y) 7)))
(draw-mark x y))))

… but it's also possible to add another dimension to carve a 3D shape, like the render on the right.

Wegetacja (“Vegetation”), Zdzisław Beksiński, c. 1957.

Beksiński is famous for his surrealist paintings, but he also had a creative photographic practice off to the side. Sadly, his abstract period only lasted a few years, but it’s always a pleasure to see some reaction-diffusion in the wild.

Some impressions from the first day of the High Temperature Festival in Wroclaw today. This is an open university day run every two years by the local Academy of Fine Arts, which specializes in art made through high temperature processes in glass, ceramic, and metal.
