RNA biologist working at Hudson Institute in Melbourne. Interested in intersection of RNA modifications (A-to-I editing), dsRNA structure and RBPs with innate immunity and autoinflammatory disease. She/her.
Good point, I mean we know that’s true right?! Maybe the reduced coverage we see of these elements we always see in sequencing data is actually due to splicing, not structure like we have always assumed ….

No problems. I always enjoy a conference recap from those I’ve missed too! Most of the talks will be available to stream for a limited time too if you’ve got regrets (and can afford it!)

Capped off the trip with a visit to the lovely group at the Kampmann lab @kampmann.bsky.social in San Francisco full of awesome discussions about all their cool screens and presenting some of our data too.

- All the talks on LINE1 and HUSH complex - I learned a lot! Kathleen Burns, Paul Lehner, Helen Rowe,
- Kristin Patrick from @thepwlab.bsky.social with very cool imaging of nuclear condensates in macrophage immune response.
- and so many others but I've run out of steam!

A few other talk highlights that are not yet published:

- Tiffany Hsu from Sun Hur's lab presenting on MDA5 in Dermatomyositis.
- @kseskv.bsky.social with awesome datasets on B cell development
- Qin Li on RNA editing in T1D

Eric Poeschla presented this fascinating story on a mouse with chronic dsRNA production that develops SIngleton-Merton syndrome like phenotype following haploinsufficiency of Adar1. This one really had me thinking!

www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
ADAR1 haploinsufficiency and sustained viral RdRp dsRNA synthesis synergize to dysregulate RNA editing and cause multi-system interferonopathy
Sensing of viral double-stranded RNA by MDA5 triggers abundant but transient interferon-stimulated gene (ISGs) expression. If dsRNA synthesis is made persistent by transgenically expressing a picornav...

Yorgo Modis presented a really interesting story on the trade off of different MDA5 variants.

www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...
MDA5 variants trade antiviral activity for protection from autoimmune disease
Loss-of-function variants in MDA5, a key sensor of double-stranded RNA from viruses and retroelements, have been associated with protection from type 1 diabetes (T1D) in genome-wide association studie...

@dulinlab.bsky.social did an impressive job explaining biophysics to biologists to uncover a new model of MDA5 activation which is super cool.

www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
An alternative mechanism for activation of innate immune signaling by MDA5
Long double-stranded (ds) RNA in the cytosol acts as a potent inflammatory molecule recognized by the receptor MDA5, triggering the innate immune response. Mutations in MDA5 affecting dsRNA recognitio...
