Upper Midwestern pseudo-intellectual former(ish) sportswriter in Shakopee, by way of Bemidji (by way of Michigan). This will probably end up being a bunch of posts about politics, Wilco and college hockey. He/him.
I don’t think you proved any point, northern owners wanted concessions and southern owners didn’t want to give them any. Hence my wariness that they will actually do anything. I hope they do, but I’ll believe it when I see it. But whatever. I’m sure MLS appreciates your passionate defense. Have fun.

I didn’t say playoff games, I said regular season games. MNUFC had a home playoff game last week and it was 30 degrees. It was brutal. They’re going to have more November games now because they will be regular season now. It will suck. Thats a fact. Sorry it conflicts with your reality.

Paul's own article states: "Some colder-market owners sought mitigation for expenses and loss of revenue that would come with the calendar flip, including renovations to stadiums and training facilities. Other owners in warmer markets pushed back on those requests, according to sources."

Why would I trust MLS? They routinely make schedules that favor certain teams at the expense of others. And they certainly have not proven to have any regard for the fans.

I never said "winter," I said "cold weather." There currently are no regular season games in November or December right now, but with this schedule they are going to be playing the entire month of November and into December. And if you add part of February, that IS two months.

Like I said, if MLS actually schedules like they say they will, great. But they haven't shown themselves to be reliable doing so.
November 14, 2025 at 5:14 PM
I'd say there's also the practical issue that most of the stadiums in the north don't have seasonally appropriate pitches. They're going to have to rebuild their training facilities to winterize those. They don't have heaters in the concourses.

MNUFC and Atlanta United once played a March game where it was 17 degrees. It can regularly get to 20 degrees in November. So, yeah, I'd say two months is accurate.

(Not saying you are trying to defend MLS necessarily, but it is just an annoying thing to hear. It seems like most moves they make are for making money, fine, but it also seems like these decisions come at the expense of fans and atmosphere, which is the reason why people like MLS to begin with.)
November 14, 2025 at 3:08 PM
Also, yes, “it’s a business,” that’s whatever anyone says when they re trying to defend anything an entity does for a craven reason of more money that probably doesn’t exist, it’s true but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck.
November 14, 2025 at 3:05 PM
It’s much more than two weeks, try two months, but fine. I’m mostly just saying I think it’s bad that MLS seems to care more about chasing nonexistent viewers that might be interested in other countries rather than their actual diehard fans who truly do care about when the games are on.

(I will die on this hill though: 100% playing and watching sports in below zero weather is WAY more challenging and unpleasant than doing so extreme heat. As someone who has done both, it's not even a debate.)
November 14, 2025 at 1:31 PM
I'll believe that schedule when I see it. I get the impression MLS doesn't care much about actual fans in seats and more about how many games they can put on TV. But, as a fan of a small market team I'm pessimistic. Hopefully I am pleasantly surprised.

I'm mostly just annoyed with people saying that "Europe" does it in one specific way when there are plenty of leagues that adapt the schedule to their own country's climate and needs. Which is why I think that argument anyway is silly.
November 14, 2025 at 1:14 PM
it’s less about snow and more about cold. Average temperature in the UK in February is 34. In Minneapolis, and in Sweden, it’s 20. Thats significant! Remember when USMNT played Honduras in St Paul and the Hondurans got frostbite? Everyone thought it was a bad idea!
November 14, 2025 at 1:06 PM
The thing that annoyed me is all the people like the dude in that thread said “Europeans can play in snow, so can we!” without realizing that most of Europe doesn’t get snow like we do in North America and those countries that do are on a summer schedule.

Scandinavian countries play a summer schedule
November 14, 2025 at 3:55 AM
Is the implication being that the Loons won't have any games here in February at all?
