Walking through a grove of golden quaking #aspens is one of nature's most beautiful experiences, like entering a natural cathedral with sacred light. See my gallery of #Colorado #fallcolors photos here: www.mountainphotography.com/gallery/autu...

In early September we had to retreat unexpectedly from a backpack trip in the #WindRiverRange of #Wyoming due to #wildfire smoke from the nearby #DollarLakeFire.

This is the time of year I start thinking about camping on top of mountains! May and June can offer windows of opportunity between the avalanche danger of winter and lightning danger of summer. Here's a couple epic high camps in the #moonlight above 13,000 ft. in the #SanJuanMountains, #Colorado.

Last week we hiked the wonderful 38-mile #TransCatalinaTrail across #CatalinaIsland, off the coast of southern #California. We did this 12 years ago, but this time was even more beautiful and memorable. Check out my photos and journal from the trek here: www.mountainphotography.com/gallery/tran...

Glorious sunrise light and rugged volcanic peaks high above the Sonoran Desert in western #Arizona. The haze was from a wildfire near #Yuma but made for a lovely atmosphere in the morning light.

Looking forward to doing this again soon! Here's some pics from the wonderful 45-mile #TransCatalinaTrail on #CatalinaIsland in #California, from 12 years ago. I wonder if it has changed much since then? See more pics and my original trip report here: www.mountainphotography.com/gallery/tran...

Whenever I'm in the lights and bustle of Las Vegas I usually catch myself gazing towards the mountains in the distance, wishing I was out there instead. It took me years to realize #LasVegas #Nevada is actually a great base for outdoors lovers. Here's a beautiful sunrise at #RedRockCanyon.

There are many wild, rugged, and seldom-visited mountain ranges in the #Mojave Desert, making it a prime area for exploratory missions. Here's a small collection of photos from a memorable 3-week trip in March 2019. See the whole trip report here: www.mountainphotography.com/gallery/moja...

Where would you rather spend the night?

Two February evenings both in the mountains above #Ouray, #Colorado.

Some photos from the #Mojave and #Sonoran deserts a couple Februaries ago. My wife caught Valley Fever out there and was laid out for 3 months afterwards with flesh-eating fungus in her lungs. We watched "The Last of Us" while she recovered. 😵 More pics: www.mountainphotography.com/gallery/febr...

I wonder what it would have been like to live in a generation with boundless optimism about the future. How do we find personal peace and growth in a society in decline? I've always turned to wilderness for solace, but is that just temporary escapism? Perhaps, but it's still mandatory for my sanity.

Moonlit mountains and the last colors of sunset, as seen from the summit of Mt. Elbert, the tallest mountain in #Colorado at 14,440 feet, Sawatch Range, February.

I spent three hours relaxing on the snowy summit on this calm winter night before I made my way down under the #moonlight.
