New research shows ME/CFS involves measurable DNA-level changes - including genetic risk factors, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and epigenetic reprogramming - linking it biologically to Long COVID and pointing to new diagnostic and treatment paths.

Let’s break it down🧵

1/ New study tested blood from ME/CFS patients for 185 human viruses.

Result: healthy controls had more viral DNA than patients (Unexpected).

Only Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) appeared more often in ME/CFS, hinting at possible reactivation in a subgroup.

Let’s break it down🧵

This is just one example of research papers we can review to gain insights from in relation to RNA data.

You can test all your RNA (20,000 markers per person) and see how you compare to Herberg et al., findings below:

The key idea is this:

- High IFI44L, low FAM89A → viral infection

- High FAM89A, low IFI44L → bacterial infection

We applied this rule to each preliminary cluster to infer possible infection type.

🔬We identified five preliminary immune clusters (C1–C5) in our Long COVID & ME/CFS cohort using two RNA markers: IFI44L and FAM89A.

Research shows these genes can help distinguish bacterial from viral infections.

Let’s break down which clusters likely fall into each category.

Study 1: Long COVID + Brain Fog

Researchers sequenced immune cells from Long COVID patients with brain fog. They found:

Increased clotting and complement genes

Decreased adaptive immune genes

This matched signs of a leaky BBB on MRI.

We are accepting participants into our RNA seq testing @amaticahealth

All RNA discussed are included and you can see how your gene expression compares to research.

🔬Can we understand the health of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) from a simple blood draw?

According to research, yes - by sequencing RNA in whole blood, we can detect changes in genes that affect or reflect BBB function

Here’s how it works and how it’s been done in research 🧵

How do mitochondria produce energy - and what happens when this process breaks down in disease?

This thread explains mitochondrial energy metabolism in health, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders. 🧵

Checking ADRA2A in our @amaticahealth cohort and it looks like a subgroup is high and low.

Which matches as not all ME/CFS patients respond the same.

Some actually show decreases in ADRA2A after exercise.

This diversity suggests different CDR profiles across patients.

The Cell Danger Response (CDR) is a potential protective process cells use when they're under threat - from infection, toxins, or injury.

It's theorised as how your body begins healing.

But when CDR doesn’t complete properly, it can lead to chronic illness - possible ME/CFS & LC. 🧵

🔬 A new study sheds light on why people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) experience post-exertional crashes and brain fog.

It focuses on a blood protein called haptoglobin (Hp) and how its different genetic forms affect symptoms. 🧵

In the blood, alterations in genes were seen that could indicate a burn out profile and reduced testosterone signalling.

We @amaticahealth will review these markers in participants blood to see if we achieve similar findings.

🔬 A new study looked at RNA inside the spinal fluid of women with neuropsychiatric Long COVID (brain fog, etc) to understand what’s going wrong in the brain.

We @amaticahealth have also found raised NKG2A & TIGIT (suppressive markers on NK cells & hinder immune response)

You can get info on your NK cell function via testing:

Leaky gut is when the barrier in your intestines becomes too porous, letting bacteria, toxins, or food particles slip into your bloodstream.

New @amaticahealth preliminary findings: elevated TIGIT in Long COVID & ME/CFS

TIGIT is found on immune cells like T & NK cells

It helps regulate the immune system by acting as a "immune system brake"

This can prevent the body from fighting cancer or infections effectively
