Mine finishes his Masters at Otago uni in December and headed for Oz in January 12th-ticket paid for and job hunting began in July in WA, NT and NSW. The brain drain from universities and polytechs, of trades and nurses, through the direct action of this Govt will take years to recover... If ever.

Āe, when I was at high school you could leave at 15 yrs and there were jobs everywhere. I went into public service and wage freezes but within 2 years we went through the share market crash and then the 90s and Ruthanasia. Young people have had a shitty time under every Nat Govt 😕

There's so many businesses closing down or restructuring at the moment it must be scary being a kid starting out at 16 looking for a job. I've got one coming out of uni with a Masters in Geology and everyone wants someone with experience. He will go to Oz. What a bloody nightmare for our kids.

I don't think it's young people we need to be worried about "wasting" tax payer $$$. Perhaps we need to cast our beady accusatory eyes across to the tax avoidets who aren't you and I.

They are more likely to be the funders and lobbyists of the current coalition Govt.

Trusts and top tax rate:IRD identified 800 people who may have incorrectly used trusts & companies to avoid the top 39% tax rate. In 2023, govt closed a loophole where income was being retained in trusts to avoid top tax rate.

And tricky Nicky:Charitable sector: In December 2024, reports surfaced that about $2 billion in the charitable sector was untaxed. The Finance Minister at the time, Nicola Willis, promised to close loopholes relating to charities.

April 2023,NZCTU stated that the govt is potentially "missing out on billions of dollars in taxation" due to tax avoidance by the wealthy. 2024 NZ Herald article estimated tax avoidance costs the economy $7–$8 billion annually,with IRD recovering about $1 billion of that through investigations

Compliance activity: A recent enforcement crackdown by the IRD is showing how significant these tax shortfalls can be. In the second half of 2024 alone, 3,600 audits uncovered $600 million in undeclared tax, with half of that coming from fewer than 10 audits of large businesses.
