Inadequate bike infrastructure is a major contributor to cyclist casualties in the US, but the attitudes of US drivers are also a huge factor. They view cyclists not as fellow commuters but as obstacles that don’t belong there, and they assume anyone biking instead of driving is being a contrarian.

I’m back home visiting family and I’m really struck by how hostile the infrastructure here is to cyclists and pedestrians. Yeah the drivers are angry but also it’s nearly impossible to coexist. Can’t believe I used to road ride here.

I used to live in a town that had received this treatment ten years ago and folks still lose their minds about it on the reg…I’m glad to see it implemented on a Bellingham street and hope people can accept it with a bit of grace.
