Inadequate bike infrastructure is a major contributor to cyclist casualties in the US, but the attitudes of US drivers are also a huge factor. They view cyclists not as fellow commuters but as obstacles that don’t belong there, and they assume anyone biking instead of driving is being a contrarian.

As Bellingham nears completion of its comp plan update, one major change will be the sunsetting of its 25 neighborhood plans. These documents represent grassroots community planning and neighborhood activism, but they also represent the power and privilege of being the loudest voice in the room.

I’m back home visiting family and I’m really struck by how hostile the infrastructure here is to cyclists and pedestrians. Yeah the drivers are angry but also it’s nearly impossible to coexist. Can’t believe I used to road ride here.
