Hi Seismo-Bluesky! I decided to test a pipeline with SeisBench, PyOcto, NonLinLoc, and HypoDD on the Santorini sequence. The level of activity (>4,500 events) is truly stunning! There are repeated bursts migrating backwards and forwards, spreading outwards from a narrow, almost linear channel.

🌋 Volcanic eruptions are unpredictable, but OpenPDAC is changing the game!

In this video, Mattia de' Michieli Vitturi from INGV takes us behind the scenes of #OpenPDAC—a ChEESE flagship code simulating everything from volcanic gases to massive rock fragments.

🌋 Simulating the Unpredictable: OpenPDAC 🌋

Volcanic eruptions can be devastating. OpenPDAC, a ChEESE code by INGV, simulates gases, particles, and debris, changing our understanding of phreatic eruptions

I once again updated the graph with the latest data from tonight. The #earthquake sequence is still ongoing NE of Santorini. We are getting slightly fewer higher magnitude events at the moment. There have been at least 1474 eqs since Jan 26 up until now, according to the data from GEIN. ⚒🧪 #Greece

I made a quick map of historical seismicity for the region of today’s M7.6 #earthquake near the Cayman Islands. This left lateral strike slip event occurred on a fault system that produced a few similar events in size & mechanism in the last decade.
(Good to see that USGS NEIC is still online!)🧪⚒️

movements in other previously inactive rupture zones cannot be ruled out.

The quakes caused extensive damage in the region, and 50 people died. In the current EQ series, much weaker quakes are being observed upto now. The rupture zone of 1956 has not yet accumulated enough energy again due to the low displacement rates, but ...
A bit of history: In July 1956, two earthquakes with magnitudes of over 7 occurred in the now seismically active region. One occurred in the upper earth's crust and caused a local tsunami with wave heights of up to 22 meters on the island of Amorgos.
