You say that a poet is always an Anarchist. I disagree. But I hope, at least, that he is always a sportsman.
No, a tiny fraction of apartments are rent-controlled, bc the system was phased out decades ago.

About half are rent stabilized.

Thank you for your polite response. I don’t think we really disagree, after reading that link; I was needlessly combative.

I agree that intelligence is fractal and, though the gestalt can be measured, there is no single intelligence factor.

Hungary and Sweden currently have exactly the same TFR (1.52), so I’m not sure that holds up as a causal explanation.
June 28, 2025 at 10:09 AM
No, it’s a great way to measure intelligence. It’s just that there are mental virtues and skills which are distinct from intelligence.

Which just about every culture on earth knows.
June 28, 2025 at 9:45 AM
That said, it is absolutely true that an IQ test is a deeply flawed way to measure non-human intelligence, just as chess is.
June 27, 2025 at 10:53 PM
The problem with this argument is that IQ is by far the best measure of broad intelligence we have *within populations* and its predictive power is well established.

Yes; we have a special healthcare system for the special needs of the military. It is famously frustrating and flawed, despite servicing solely the Troops, who generally get high regard from politicians.

Seems like extending it would cause problems!

The government having a monopoly on something they want to reduce the consumption of is quite different from a public option for something there isn’t enough demand for the private sector to provide.

What, aside from disagreeing with your politics and spending his entire life selling groceries, did the nasty first-generation immigrant do to deserve having his life’s work stolen from him?
June 25, 2025 at 9:31 PM
This is such a funny question.

Do ethics matter if you never have to make a hard choice?
June 25, 2025 at 7:35 PM
Not an inverse, an equivalent.
June 25, 2025 at 11:17 AM
It’s just a very dumb policy because why would you do that?

If he wanted to open shops that sold prepared nutritious meals at cost, that would at least represent an interesting market niche…

Taking a Xanax and imagining the people who take the driving test on the UES DMV.

Biden is not the boss of Congress.

…Thomas Mann and Tom Jones?

Is this library in Boston circa 1910?

I don’t see many libs saying they prefer MTG over AOC.

This shit is on the left.
June 23, 2025 at 1:17 PM
I’m not saying it was a good idea to bomb it, I’m saying:
1) The stated goal was to destroy the uranium enrichment plant
2) This, unlike Pearl Harbor, is an end in itself
3) It was unquestionably a plant created for enriching weapons grade uranium
June 22, 2025 at 9:04 PM
Again: this argument does not reckon with the USA dropping an insane amount of bombs on a specific mountain with a uranium enrichment plant hundreds of feet under it.

If the US is lying…why did they do that?
June 22, 2025 at 9:02 PM
Twenty years ago Iran was pursuing improved relations with the West, which nukes would have ruined.

They have worked towards nukes in recent years in no small part because Trump destroyed the agreement we made with them not to, because Trump is a feckless asshole.
June 22, 2025 at 9:00 PM
What do you think is true here?
That the uranium enrichment plant Iran built under a mountain and readily acknowledges…is solely for civilian nuclear power?
June 22, 2025 at 8:55 PM
Iran does not deny it! Are you saying there *isn’t* a uranium enrichment plant at Fordow? Do you think Trump bombed a mountain with nothing under it, or do you think there was something else under it?
June 22, 2025 at 8:52 PM
Unlike such fever dreams, no one, including Iran, denies fordow is a deep underground uranium enrichment facility for enriching weapons-grade uranium.
June 22, 2025 at 8:48 PM
US intel programs confirmed they did not have nukes.

You can’t possibly think this is a misunderstanding and the Iranians were enriching uranium in an underground mountain compound far past the levels needed for nuclear power for civilian reasons?
June 22, 2025 at 7:59 PM
The Japanese wanted something other than the destruction of the US pacific fleet, so destroying (part of) it didn’t work.

Trump “wants” the destruction of the Iranian nuclear program, so blowing it up is, in fact, an end in itself.
