Passive observer. I am a refusee from X and a linguist with four books.

I’ve returned to Machi Tawara’s tanka after some time, and I’m struck by how many of them are quietly brilliant. They stir something in me—enough to make me want to compose tanka of my own.

’ve been buying Koichi Masuno’s tanka and reading his works from his early years, but I sense a certain misogyny in his poetry. There’s something painfully raw about it.

I am shocked by the news that a bank employee had been stealing as much as 1 billion yen from the bank’s safety deposit boxes. I am also surprised that the employee’s name has not been reported. Why is it that the victims are identified by name in reports, while the perpetrators are not?

I watched the movie “In Our Prime”, and found it underwhelming, as its narrative closely mirrors Gus Van Sant’s “Finding Forrester”. That said, with age, I’ve come to appreciate the profound beauty of mathematics—something I couldn’t grasp in my youth. Longevity, it seems, has its rewards.

I watched the movie Soft & Quiet, which depicts a hate crime from the perspective of white supremacists. There were so many opportunities to turn back, yet why couldn’t they stop themselves? Even when faced with subtle reactions from those around them, why did they fail to question their actions?
