Also it occurs to me that in the realms of generally easygoing lighthearted pulpy sci-fi superhero adventures about a family group led by a scientist patriarch you've also got Tom Strong, which is far from Alan Moore's most cerebral work but is carried along by a huge wealth of fun ideas.

I think Witch Hat Atelier is one of the best comics of the last decade or so specifically because it's full of warmth and joy *but also* takes the time to contrast it against serious cruelty and negligence, and emphasises that kindness requires effort, and does all that really well.

My mam took me to see an anniversary screening of Blue Velvet at the Tyneside Cinema when I was 18. We sat on the front row of the Gallery screen. A truly white knuckle experience.

Also when I went to see Promare at Meadowhall when I was at uni my friend and I got mugged afterwards.

This does depend on whether you consider visual novels video games, or a distinct form unto themselves, but I'll go for Tomonori Sudou and studio Ufotable's trilogy of films adapting Fate/Stay Night: Heavens Feel. Like all of Ufotable's work on Fate it's viscerally nasty and spectacular to look at.

Post a movie you like with a terrible rotten tomatoes

I just have a soft spot for Ben Wheatley I think. Also I think it's OK for it to exist even though the Hitchcock version exists and is great.

The infamous Osborn cum face panel from Sins Past where he looks like Tommy Lee Jones is made more surreal by the way the artist has made it look like he appears to have drawn his hair on with eyebrow pencil.

I need to rethink my storage situation because all my modest collection of western comics are on one shelf and I think it's bowing under the weight.

You too can own one of the best albums of the 2020s so far on an obsolete format (And also as a digital download so you can actually listen to it). It's endorsed by me and also this goose I found in my yard.

I love Iain Banks so I can offer more detail on the entry for Player of Games. Yes the Culture is alien. The Culture itself has normalised radical bodily autonomy, with repeated artificial but fully functional sex changes being the most "normal" way biological members of the Culture use it.

The bit in Grant Morrison's Animal Man run that's a tie-in with the Invasion event and he touches the bomb that makes you perceive the creator's whole life before it kills you

Post Eva, one of the big talents who came up through Gainax was Hiroyuki Imaishi who made Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Imaishi is not a subtle director by any means, but he's also most certainly not a stupid one, so it's a gloriously maximalist yet heartfelt meditation on the idea of "dudes rock".

In particular I don't think you can consider Eva in its proper cultural context without at least looking at the original Mobile Suit Gundam. I don't love the original Gundam, but I respect how much it achieves with such limited animation and how daring it is.
