"U.S. gold reserves are over 8,000 tons, our gold reserves should be at least 5,000 tons," he said. China's economy, as measured by nominal gross domestic product, amounts to 64% of U.S. GDP. Applying this percentage to U.S. gold reserves of 8,133.5 would mean China's gold reserves should be 5,205 tons. That is more than double China's holdings. According to official data, the PBOC held 2,300.4 tons of gold, valued at $244 billion, in its reserves in July. Western analysts say other state and state-controlled entities probably store further amounts in vaults in China.”

Finally, it is possible that Takaichi's victory could be good news for Noda Yoshihiko and his Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP). The CDP has undoubtedly been floundering, having failed to gain any seats in the July upper house elections. However, a Takaichi-led LDP could be a better foil for moderate conservative Noda than an Ishiba or Koizumi-led LDP. The CDP has been looking for an identity; Takaichi may give it one. Left-wing parties both old (the Japanese Communist Party) and new (Reiwa Shinsengumi) could benefit from a Takaichi government for similar reasons.

The Democratic establishment is clearly betting that Republicans will offer them an electoral victory while they attend the wedding parties of billionaires. The only vision for the Democratic Party originates from its left wing, which is vigorously censured by its mainstream. It may well be that the Democratic leadership is correct in thinking that the best strategy is to do nothing and waiting for MAGA to fail. But this, like MAGA, is a "back again" ideology, one of "restoring" democracy rather than transtorming the conditions that generated the present disaster. To restore democracy, it needs to be reformed. This is the project we need.”

As the country’s Food and Drug Administration warns that a continued supply shortage could endanger public health, Iran is now aiming to produce enough poppies for its own consumption. “Legal cultivation is necessary to ensure long-term sustainability,” FDA spokesperson Mohammad Hashemi told the Financial Times. “Without legal cultivation or controlled imports, the country may face problems in securing vital medicines such as morphine, codeine and pethidine.” President Masoud Pezeshkian has personally signed off on the health ministry’s call for resuming poppy cultivation, officials say. Fatemeh Mohajerani, Iran’s government spokesperson, this month said: “Given the difficulties of imports under sanctions, it was decided to rely on regulated domestic production.” The country needs an annual 500 tonnes of opium for medical manufacturing a year, experts say, but sanctions make it difficult to import the drug.
