DMs from people I don't know will probably be ignored - sorry.
range according to a standard, whether CLTC, WLTP or EPA, is the range under a very specific set of conditions, e.g. defined speeds and temperature in particular. Those conditions probably won't match what most people think of when they think of driving range, so the standard needs to be specified

The headline should say "CLTC range".

CLTC is mentioned in the article. Most people will just see the headline and that sets unreasonable expectations, and reinforces the view of anti EV types that the quoted range is some sort of scam.

The reality is that ...

Again - very interesting!

An EV built as an EV from the ground up weighs much the same as the equivalent ICE car (where equivalent includes the same passenger and luggage space). See eg Tesla model 3 Vs BMW 3 series.

Very interesting!
November 10, 2025 at 6:26 PM
Indeed. The majority of stuff that goes into making a car is the same regardless of powertrain.
November 10, 2025 at 5:40 PM
Compare the weight of the overall drivetrain. Overall EVs and ICE weigh much the same. Engines are heavy and need more other stuff like exhaust system. Electric motors are light and need less other stuff.

Shocking amount of weight removed from the Jensen Interceptor.

In terms of materials needed to build cars, it is insignificant compared to iron ore and aluminium

So that means the 40% of global shipping which is transporting fossil fuels is even worse than I had imagined
November 10, 2025 at 5:10 PM
Interesting. I'm surprised by that level of inefficiency in normal conditions but it seems reasonable if it's very cold as the battery has to be warmed up to be able to charge.

This girl was not abstract: www.reuters.com/world/corone...

NOx pollution is a problem in cities, where lots of people live. NOx pollution at sea is less of a problem for people. They are not comparable. I doubt the amount of NOx from additional shipping is same order of magnitude as that from cars
Coroner urges UK to clean up toxic air after London girl's death
A coroner on Wednesday urged Britain to adopt legally-binding air quality targets to save lives, after a landmark ruling found air pollution contributed to the death of a London schoolgirl.

How have you found that out?

There isn't a single coal fuelled power station in UK

Just as well their "fuel" is free and causes no pollution
November 10, 2025 at 9:28 AM
There's much less brake wear in an EV than an ICE car due to regen breaking. EVs designed as EVs are much the same weight as closest equivalent ICE car. Big petrol and diesel SUVs are the heaviest cars on the road and do you complain about them? Road damage is more from lorries than any cars
November 10, 2025 at 9:27 AM
The cost is not the same. Car pollution causes health problems and contributes to climate change. Those costs are enormous. Some of that cost is being paid now and some will be paid by future generations.
November 10, 2025 at 9:21 AM
I've never had problem finding charger. Car satnav shows where they are. You just need a different mindset. Instead of waiting until the car is empty and filling up, you charge when the car is stopped. On a 300 mile drive, I'm going to want to stop anyway for food and toilet. Just charge then.

"range anxiety" isn't a thing for people who actually have an EV. Battery fires are much less likely than wet fuel fires. Many cars (including most made in China) now use LFP batteries which have even lower fire risk. Batteries typically have a warranty of 100000 miles.

What "problem" is that? I've had EVs for almost 5 years now and not had any problems. The energy density of petrol has allowed, and continues to allow, petrol cars to get away with being horribly inefficient for 100+ years.

It's only 21% of the atmosphere, get over it! Most of the atmosphere is nitrogen, which is plant food. The level of oxygen used to be much lower and the planet still survived. Here's a scientific paper that I'm going to bogusly claim shows humans don't need oxygen: www.jstor.org/stable/29775...

Fuel duty is not the same as VAT
November 6, 2025 at 7:06 PM
Fuel duty has been frozen for 14 years rather than going up by RPI. It even went down in 2022. BEVs already pay more VED than some petrol and diesel cars. There's already VAT on electricity.
