From 2011–2018 I played cover gigs to get by. Occasionally, I still get panicked texts from agents, but fees haven’t budged in those 13 years: £175 for 3x45 min sets in 2011 is STILL £175 now when it should be £250 with inflation. 🗣️…Maybe this is why you can’t find enough musicians to play shows? 🤷‍♂️

This would also mean switching to a user centric payment model where listeners subscription money goes to the songs they listened to that month (this doesn’t currently happen under pro rata streaming model). Oh & need higher cap? …Get the pro tier or business tier for $16/$32 🤷🏻‍♂️

The average Spotify user streams ~25 hrs/month. Spotify could do the right thing: cap ‘unlimited’ $10.99 plan at 700 streams (~45hrs/month), pay artists 1c/stream ($7 to artists), keep $3 for themselves, and put 99c into a grassroots music fund. Fairer streaming is possible…🧵
