Maude E. Callen (1898 – 1990) was a midwife in the South Carolina Lowcountry for over 60 years.
She provided in-home services as doctor, dietitian, psychologist, bail-goer, and friend to thousands of poor (most of them desperately poor) patients — only two percent of whom were white.
