Congrats Zohran! You ran an amazing campaign; you walked the streets, talked to the people, and led outreach to those who expressed worries over some of your ideas. It's been years since a candidate built trust like you did. Let's make this work together!

Huge news. I am so happy that Elizabeth Tsurkov is free at last!

It is a sad day when Rashid Khalidi cancels his class due to the simple fact that he can no longer teach it at Columbia under the current conditions. For me, this is a bitter moment; he trained and taught me as a historian, my mentor. Read below and see the link in the next post. #Palestine #Israel

A fun distraction from my work, scanning newspapers from the 1920s:

A British paper reported a girl started to chant Hebrew-a language she didn't know, when she fell into a state of "delirium." Turns out she was a servant for a Rabbi and had heard his sermons. Sounds like she was a great student!

"Israel is committing genocide."

Israel's main human rights organization, B’Tselem, releases its most damning report ever: We never thought we'd write this report, but we also never believed this would be our reality. www.btselem.org/publications...

Sad to hear about the passing of Ziad Rahbani. A revolutionary not just in his music's words but his whole style. This really came out in the music he did with his mother, the legendary Fairuz. This album was part of my own university years, when we dreamed of another world.

One of Israel's most staunch liberal Zionists, Fania Oz-Salzberger, daughter of the renowned author Amos Oz, pleads with Israeli soldiers not to serve in Gaza, reaching out to their families as well. She cites war crimes, mass starvation, and the betraying of the hostage families by the government.

Just finished a writing “workation” in Thessaloniki and Athens after my trip to Israel was cancelled due to the war. I got to do some research in Thessaloniki/Selanik while Athens was a cool place to explore in the evenings. Used the chance to also enjoy some photography.

A far-right Israeli slogan: Without a [new] Nakba, there will not be victory. I often teach how far-right groups frequently recognize crimes committed by the state. It is where recognition and denial merge into one front.

It was nice to see my Haaretz article this morning on its digital front page!

Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of a city of 16 million people and the hope of the future will be forced to sit in prison awaiting a trial. Erdogan used to say that if you win Istanbul, you win the country. Imamoglu has led his CHP opposition to a force Erdogan's AKP ever new. Now, he is behind bars.

Another night of protests in front of Istanbul Municipality over detainment of its mayor Ekrem Imamoglu; this comes as protests have taken place across the country, with universities becoming flashpoints of clashes with police. Here the opposition mayor of Ankara, Mansur Yavas addresses the crowd.

Happening now: Dilek Imamoglu, wife of Ekrem Imamoglu, the Istanbul mayor, awakened this morning by a police raid and then detained, speaks to crowds gathering at Istanbul's municipality. Today, "we were all arrested," she yells out, as crowds shout slogans, this as protests were declared banned.

Yet another sad day.

Seeing a Palestinian and an Israeli stand together on stage, winning the Oscar's Best Documentary for "No Other Land" was one of my happier moments since October 7th. Basel Adra and Yuval Avraham gave a joint message of peace and hope, calling for justice and showing that we are better together.

Historic day: After 40 of armed struggle, the decades-long jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan calls for PKK to disarm. This peace process is facilitated by Erdogan and his coalition partners, signaling support for a peace process (one that did not materialize over a decade ago).

Good to see people pouring into the store to show solidarity. For any academic working on Palestine, this is their coffee shop. During my year there last year, I spent quite a few hours talking with Ahmad, a quiet, reserved, thoughtful/thought-provoking person. His arrest is absurd and terrible.

The police raided the store, claiming books on Palestine, some written by Israeli authors, were inciteful, but the owners were arrested on "disturbing public order." When it comes to Palestinian symbols, the trend is to arrest no questions asked even if not illegal to possess/share. No rule of law.

The raid on the Jerusalem Educational Bookstore and arrest of its workers/owners, Mahmoud and Ahmad Muna, is outrageous. It is the only bookstore specializing in issues of Palestine, Israel, and Jerusalem. It is an iconic store that preserves what little is left of Palestinian culture in the city.

Geçtiğimiz hafta kitap söyleyişini düzenlediği için @iletisimyayinlari.bsky.social 'e ve Nostalji Kitabevi’ne çok teşekkür ederim. Söyleşiye katılım gerçekten harikaydı. Today is a beautiful day: Karina, Daniella, Naama, and Liri are coming home. Let all the hostages come home and let this terrible war come to an end. Let the ceasefire continue. Let Palestinians in Gaza find an end to these awful days.

Ending an exhilarating two week intensive J-term winter course at NYU Abu Dhabi on site in Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai; it focuses on rethinking the past and imagining the future. My students made this an absolute joy.

Flying to Abu Dhabi from Istanbul at 10:55 PM on New Year's Eve, I missed fireworks that would have been visible if not for the time differences. But to my joy, I saw the lights of Baghdad-and other cities-places I've studied/taught for years. Like a child, I was glued to the window looking down.
