anyways read theory. american soldiers do not swear loyalty to the commander-in-chief. they swear loyalty to the constitution. the difference matters--not in sunny skies and good weather, but on bad days, when you are pressed to the breaking point--that is precisely when it matters most.

For the entire 100+ history of mass consumer capitalism in the US, capitalists have trained their marketing sights especially on young people. Many reasons why they've done that, but one reason is that young people have less experience and maturity and are hence more easily manipulated/molded.

When a customer says to a normal business "I don't want this," that business has to either change course or die. When a customer says to Meta "I don't want this," Meta says "oh you just wait, we'll figure out some way to convince you that you indeed DO want this, plus, where else can you go?"

It's a complicated dynamic that's gotten us to this terrible place, but one key part of it, IMO, is that these companies regard their users not as customers with pre-existing needs they seek to fulfill, but as a malleable product whose attention they seek to manipulate and monetize.
