I once kinda got into it at a bar at a school board conference with a "well how do we know without metrics" guy and ranted something to the effect of, "why do we give a shit about whether or not they graduate if they stop reading at 23 and can't tell a Daily Mail article from a science paper by 40"

I maintain that the average American over 30 would underperform the average American graduating high school on a comprehensive exit exam (with results decaying with age) and really nothing has shaken that expectation over the last fifteen years or so.

Unfortunately for us all, the inability of a vast swath of the U.S. populace to understand how those two things are disconnected is a big reason why those two things are disconnected.

If this was not an accurate representation of the American electorate Trump would not have won in 2024 and we need to remember that because we can't win the electorate if we don't understand how it lacks object permanence (and also what narratives actually have permanence)

Winning an election does not give you the authority to throw out things that were already decided either through ignoring the law or just getting your friendly neighborhood in-the-bag SCOTUS to Calvinball you the result you wanted.

That is what the rule of law is supposed to be about.
