Phase Leader/Y4 teacher from Norfolk. I create and post open-ended maths tasks for KS2 (7-11) that promote creativity/curiosity http://islesofwhatif.com Trustee for @atmmathematics.bsky.social Views my own.
This task provoked some interest at my conference session this week so I thought I'd share to see if anyone fancied having a go.

Polypad interactive to assist with attempts (you can drag copies of the triangles): polypad.amplify.com/p/cR6OglvIOO...

Looking forward to seeing people at FPTC conference this week.

I'll be exploring how exploratory variation might illuminate beauty and power through the surprising use of equilateral triangles.

Why not try one of the tasks online? islesofwhatif.com/2023/10/03/t...

Three triangles. Many tasks. One goal: to show how playful explorations of these mathematical objects can transform perspectives. Simple words can hold beauty and power in a poem, can simple mathematical objects hold the same? KS2/3 workshop

Residential done for another year. Wind, rain, sleepless nights, exhaustion, but still worth it. More important than ever for children to experience sights beyond the classroom. Especially when they look like this.

With the very wet weekend, started working on my micro cpd session on January 14th - Embracing Purposeful Meanderings

Who wouldn't want to spend a Tuesday evening in Jan doing and discussing maths?

Did an assembly on maths to Y4-6

Introduced a challenge. Lovely how many chn (and teachers!) then came to me with their own attempts

Fold an A4 piece of paper four times. How many sides can be constructed from the folded shape? We outlined the perimeter each fold for reproducibility

I'm sure there are many very clever uses of ai but in my family, what matters is our 'plonker status'. It asks one question about each of us each day. Then it decides on our status based on the answers. I'm clearly still facing the impact of past mishaps today...

I'm not sure that I'd say favourite but the most bizarre was this beauty. My cats are called Holmes and Watson and so I was given this hand-etched glass of Benedict Cumberbatch 😂 The child didn't say who it was or give context when I received it so I was a tad confused as I couldn't work it out...
