she’ll learn if you go through it first

i couldn't seem to find it looking at transcriptions of the podcast. i am very pro ai and feel that most opinions people have about ai are due to common misconceptions.
here's a recent article trying to estimate energy usage
www.technologyreview.com/2025/05/20/1...
We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

that is just simply not true. not sure where you even found an estimate remotely close to that

this is presented as a passive action that happens to you. “The Democratic Party must present viable candidates in the Primaries”. You are the party, or at least part of it. if this matters to you, do something about it

$20 in cash and $15 credit written on a piece of paper for a local pizza place

he's right. like it or not, models are exponentially improving and there's nothing to indicate it will stop anytime soon
May 23, 2025 at 6:13 PM
this is like shitting your pants for a year for gaza. yeah sure you can make an argument about why you do it, maybe even a good one. you can find people to defend it. it might even raise some attention for the cause.

but at the end of the day, all anyone will remember you for is shitting your pants

i view computers the same way. there are bad things that can come with computers. but we obv know computers are so incredibly powerful we dont even try to live w/o them. if a hospital said they were removing all electronics, you would never want to go there. why would you want anything less

i think when people express dislike for ai, they're actually expressing a dislike for other things like:
- pollution
- copyright theft
- unnecessary waste
- insincerity
- slop
this isnt necessarily inherent to ai, and i think we can oppose neg. externalities w/o losing the benefits from ai.

this seems like quite a small amount of carbon, tho right? i can see more than 5 cars from my house. you're telling me the cost to train a model on the entire internet and like all text and images of all time has less of an environmental impact than just the cars on my street.

compelling.
May 22, 2025 at 6:41 PM
can someone make an actual argument as to why ai is so bad?
May 22, 2025 at 6:37 PM
iphones before they go back to streaming movies or scrolling social media. while its true ai uses more energy than these other factors, its trivial compared to the sheer amount of power used for hedonistic purposes. why is ai's energy use so abhorrent compared to other technologies?
