Is It A Bike Lane?

In search of safe infrastructure

Stop painting pictures of bikes on the road under parked cars and telling yourself you’ve made a cycle lane

📍London, UK
This morning’s commute in central London

Against expectations, I found myself at a car race

I don’t know how to describe it but the clouds are upside down

And bottle racks are a perfect fit for cocktail shakers…

Salvaging stuff from my Twitter account before I deactivate, and came across this picture of my dad, who died last year

He’s 83 here, and enjoying cycling up a steep hill on his new e-bike

Great mobility for him even when he could no longer drive

So, how’s your day been?

This thread is for non-electric cyclists, or non-cyclists, who are e-curious or just don't see the point yet

Why is it that so many people are riding e-bikes now? After 10,000km on mine, let me explain what you may be missing out on:

Suburban Tokyo is a utility-cycling dream of quiet slow little street

Central Tokyo though, makes do with these disgraceful narrow close-pass sharrows. No wonder people mainly use the pavements

Even in central Tokyo, this department store expects its customers to want to know where the nearest cycle parking is

Is there a more civilised suburbia anywhere in the world than Tokyo’s?

Train and bicycles enable quiet liveable density with everything to hand

Love this little guy parked in Soho

An e-bike made like a moped. Even a windscreen wiper!

Comfy convenience, but no tax, licence or helmet needed, because restricted to 15mph and 250W power

I’ve said it before, but e-assist really is bringing a “Cambrian Explosion” in bike innovation and formats

My new e-bike tracks my rides in an app

This was one hell of a chaotic 90 minutes, when I needed to be in two places at once…

Your annual reminder - heated gloves and socks transform winter cycling!

Small rechargeable battery, lovely warm fingers and toes. No need to stop cycling when it gets cold

Essential for Reynaud’s sufferers too

No, we are not the same

Here’s an example. People step off the kerb here without looking, then only pay attention when going out beyond the wands

Without having to think about it, they KNOW the bit inside the wands is ‘safe’ space, because the cars are excluded

I don’t blame them, it’s a motorist’s world we live in

Need to get somewhere, but also need your martini shaken, not stirred?

This Shimokitazawa cyclist has it covered

On Thursday, Kensington High Street was reduced to one lane by these illegally parked vehicles.

Today, removing safe cycling did not improve traffic flow

So ToyRUs’s weird AI advert starts with a romantic vision of a bike shop hemmed-in by pavement parking.

You often hear “cycling works for a small city like Amsterdam, but not for a huge place like London”

So here’s a game for you:

Drop a random pin on Tokyo (world’s biggest city) in Google maps, look carefully at the Streetview. How many times can you spot bikes? Like 80-90% of the time?

Blackthorne: I’m a keen cyclist myself, and fully support cycle lanes, but this is not the right place, we all need to share the roads

Mariko: The Anjin hates cyclists

It’s January, and there are already crazy numbers of people cycling in London. The big majority of the traffic here on Kensington Gore this evening

Imagine how many more would like to cycle if only RBKC would make this route safe

Beautiful central London commute this morning

Cycle paths all well gritted. Electric heated gloves and socks working well

Only glitch was my hub gears freezing!

I measured some and you are (of course!) right. Cushion was 3m, sinusoidal hump 3.75m

Interestingly the hump had an edge for the gully, so a sinusoidal cushion is at least *possible*

So is it habit, guidance, or difficulty that’s stopping us?
