Also I am not a fan of Russian classics either, besides the mermerizing storytelling style, I find the plots pretty dull and boring in fact.
I think reading preference is strictly personal and trying to fit it to argument from popularity is not necessary.

I don’t think this is generalizable- besides him and maybe few other (no more than handful) writers I am not a fan of Turkish literature at all. I mostly prefer English.
The reason I like him is not bc I am just culturally familiar with it, but because I find it interesting, captivating and funny.

His books are rooted deeply in Ottoman/Turkish culture references. So I don’t think a translation would be even possible, even the best one.
Also why would a measure of success requires one to be successful in western world?
Some best selling authors in English are also pretty shitty imo btw.

His style might not match your taste which is understandable but does not justify to reduce him to a copycat with zero relevance to both content and style of another author.
