There I stood in front of a portrait by Sir Henry Raeburn. Mostly self-taught, he rose from a goldsmith’s apprenticeship to become Scotland’s leading portraitist of the 18th century.

His paintings often carry cloudy, ill-defined edges—some say because he never fully mastered priming a canvas. But what he lacked in polish, he made up for in psychological depth.

His portraits feel alive: flawed, human, unforgettable.
