as they get older, and begin living deeper, they... dispense with the eyes in an incredibly cursed progression. here's a composite photograph showing the different stages from photographer Dante Fenolio:

a composite photograph from dante fenolio, with a total of six images of an ipnops. the first five are horizontal and on the left of the frame. the topmost fish has normal looking eyes. as you go further down the image, each fish has eyes with progressively larger pupils, until by the fourth one, they're no longer really eyes, but sunken in structures where the eyes used to be. the fifth fish is an adult, which has large, white sunken depressions in a rough hexagon shape where each eye used to be. the image on the left is a full-body shot of an adult ipnops from a dorsal perspective. the fish is narrow, has four small fins, two on each side, and a short caudal fin. it's white, with visible scales.

I was just reading about bristlemouths, tiny luminescent fish, and how there may be quadrillions of them, more than any vertebrate genera!
