Edit 1/n: The OG study was actually published in 2019 -- not 2017, which is when I started working on it 🙈

💁‍♀️ The statistician in me does need to point out that the 95% confidence interval in the most recent study was a bit wider (−11.82, 0.91) than the original study, due to analytical design + less data in pre/post time periods

And, we found that the ROE Act (removal of parental consent requirement) reduced average time to abortion by ✨5.46 days✨!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is almost identical to our estimate of the delay of 5.2 days in our original 2017 study!

In December 2020, Massachusetts passed the ROE Act to dismantle discriminatory barriers to safe, legal abortion in Massachusetts.

The Result ➡️ 16 and 17-year-olds can seek abortion care in consultation with their health care provider, without medically unnecessary barriers to their care!

Indeed, our work published in 2017 found that minors using judicial bypass had an average of 5.2 day delay (compared to parental consent).

We also found that this delay led to some minors becoming ineligible for medication abortion.

First, a little history refresher:

From 1997 to 2020, minors seeking abortions in MA had to receive parental consent *or* go before a judge.

However, almost all judicial bypass cases were approved... so this just created unnecessary barriers for young people.
