Here are some thoughts from @erisceres.bsky.social (I've included the ALT text as well if needed).
O'Rahilly did propose some Scottish influence on Ulster Irish, at least for some of the vowels I would say there is a mixture of things going on: 1) the dialectal continuum suggests that Ulster Irish would be closer the Scottish Gaelic than other Irish varieties by proximity; 2) Scottish Gaelic has had some influence on Ulster Irish, but I'm not sure if that was anything to do with the plantations per sé, though perhaps it was. I'm not sure how many Gaelic speaking Scots were planted in Ulster and by what degree that had an effect on Irish.
