This is obvious. Because Melania’s father was the one from Yugoslavia. Trump’s first wife Ivana (and her father) were from Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (at least this is what it was called when she lived there). And his second wife was the only one born in USA.

Melania's father was not born in USSR, but in what used to be Yugoslavia (now Slovenia). Yugoslavia was USSR puppet state, but not a part of USSR. He was indeed a member of the Communist Party (of Yugoslavia).

I hope you are right. But so many on the left are so pissed with this capitulation that I am afraid blame for skyrocketing insurance premiums will be split between Rs and Ds (maybe not equally, but still…). As in “yes, Rs voted NO on subsidies, but Dems didn’t fight when they could”.

I don’t think they got played. I am 100% certain they know that GOPer’s promises are worthless. They just decided it is too inconvenient for them to continue or the pressure from donors was too great, or whatever. In any case it is worse than being trusting fools who got played.

Protests do work — history is clear on that. But I feel we need a very clear “ask”. “No kings” is symbolic, but not focused enough. Vietnam war protests obviously were about ending the war. March on Washington had very clear demands as well. We need actionable demands and then protest often.
