"November 12, 1987"; I was kicked in the head during a gym class in high school. The coach was negligent with response & was forced to resign, which hardly captures how those days & months, how those years "actually went for us",...

On Boulder High School stationary: "January 27, 1992 A recommendation for Ramey Wood: Indomitable is the best word I know to describe Ramey. I have known him since he was in the tenth grade. He was in my Composition Techniques class at the time of his original accident. When he had a reoccurrence of symptoms, we reorganized his course of study, and he finished the semester with me in Accelerated Reading. We have become good friends. Ramey is very bright, very determined, and very resilient. He works hard. When he runs into a problem that he cannot solve, he gets help. Nothing gets him down permanently. He has had to cope in ways the average high school student in our fair land would not even begin to comprehend. In short, he is not a little boy. He knows what he wants and he is prepared to work to get it no matter how long it takes. As a result of his injury, Ramey has incurred horrendous medical bills which I am quite positive no insurance policy would cover. I would go so far to say that Children's Hospital and his physicians explored new fields as they experimented with ways that would allow Ramey to live a tolerable, useful life. And unless some medical miracle comes along, Ramey will be under medication for life. Furthermore, I believe that probably any money put aside for Ramey's education was used as a beginning in paying off the bills not covered by insurance. Finally, before his accident, I would have guessed that on graduation, Ramey would have been eligible for a basketball scholarship at a very good school, perhaps, back East -- for he has the grades to make that possible. Ramey was a very special person when I first knew him. He is even more special now. In the course of learning to survive and compensate for the effects of his injury, Ramey has developed a concern for other people. However, he has always been kind and thoughtful. Fortunately he possesses a wonder sense of humor."

Pre-COVID19, I ask the same of "Leaders" then, & of "Leaders" today: "WTAF we going on about, for reals?"

I live with disability & was home-bound for 5yrs before COVID-19 hit. Many hearing me now cannot avoid having known this, & it’s partly why I feel a kind of urgency & pressure to offer some perspective today: I’ve been a resident of the Borough since 1995; I have paid property taxes since 1997; I earned a Master’s degree with UAF (conferred in 2000); I was “campaign manager” for Mike Lewis & that Borough Assembly run in 1999; I worked for a set of years with each KUAC & KSUA radio, worked with Leo Olesen as “Expeditor” during his time with the Yukon Quest, slung shots of espresso at the old “2Street Station” in the co-op building downtown there before, during & after the “Block-13” & the likes of the downtown parking garage developments,… I thought about buying that coffee-shoppe & business at that time, too, for the record; From 2004-2008 we were close with Karl Bushby & his “Goliath Expedition” - Karl crossed the Bering Strait on foot in March of 2006. Also in the mid/late-2000s, I drove night-shift taxi locally for research & stories, to keep learning & listening to “here”; When I first moved to town, for some of that very first Summer, I worked a civilian position at the golf course on Ft.Wainwright,… “Interdisciplinary Learning”, was title of that Master’s of mine in 2000, by the way. Our families, our neighbors & their families, their friends, those who might next year decide to relocate here & are “younger”, or they are “aged” & are curious, are willing to respect what can be done to respect “later career”,… They may or may not be “wiser”,… We might not today be… But so many have & have had a lot to offer “here” - & “that’s on us”, as ‘leaders’, yeah? & as residents,… To help & support that, no? So, as just another community member, I work for it, I respect that,… & look forward to such collaboration. Thank you. I hope to be available to the Commission & to give the testimony live. My health & condition does not always support this. Just in case I am not able, I needed, wanted to offer the perspective just the same,... I am happy to also offer some supporting references, articles, etc.,... We have a few decades worth,... :) But, seriously,... sincerely,... I cannot really say how I anticipate what will be "heard", frankly,...the experience of the last few, of the last 5-10+yrs now, goodness, indeed,... Emergent from my undergraduate experience & in practical & philosophical agreement with my interests & graduate work, I would like to suggest a project to revise & strengthen the Interdisciplinary Studies Program at UNC." "I have a problem. I grew up with this idea that the university, the institution of higher learning, was this tremendous bank of knowledge, wisdom & experience. I held this impression that when one entered these campuses, arms were held wide in greetings of acceptance and warmth. I believed these institutions had a deep interest in the ideas and resources one brought to bear. Coupled with this, I held that if the University didn't know "it", they would send one out to the world to find "it" and and then be filled with eager anticipation for the return. As being the first in my family to attend, it is somewhat reasonable to understand that I might have this view of higher education. Perhaps it is needless to say, but anyone with even the most remote exposure to the university today knows this vision I had is quite different from the reality. Further, as my life has lead on, I have also noticed that this discrepancy in higher education is quite similar to that I have found to exist in many other institutions in our society. I have witnessed this in our political structure, our public education system, how we treat those over age-65, and our economic structure as well as in the media, our personal habits and our understanding of our environment.
