"The purpose for this proposal, and my interest in the Interdisciplinary Degree Program as a whole, stem from my ever growing awareness that nothing is alone and separate. Everything, from oranges to surgical gowns and polar bears to the balconies of Paris, nothing, no-thing, is separate from all else. In realizing this, my interests on a grander & deeper scale found themselves in conflict with what I continued to hear, to be exposed to, and to be taught specifically now at this time in my life here at the university level of my formal education. I found myself asking the same question about every topic, concern, problem, thought and idea that I encountered, "Why is this issue or topic treated as if it is alone and isolated from all else?" I felt that the concept of "tunnel vision" was strongly present. I saw an invisible wall, an unnatural wall, surrounding individuals and their respective areas that they were figures for. Educators, students, faculty, virtually everybody that I encountered either displayed this wall or were being supported in building it for themselves. This is not okay with me. Especially since free-thinking, self-knowledge, the ability to truly relate to each other, as well as just the basic feeling of comfort, security, and happiness mean something to my life. You see, I have grown-up within a family, immediate and extended, that has never seen one of its members attend college. I grew-up seeing the 'University' as this wide base of knowledge and experience, and if you had a question that could not be answered, you were strongly encouraged and supported to go out there and find it. For me, when I got to the point outlined above, I did not see that support and encouragement to go and do what *I* needed and what *I* thought the direction of my life should go. I was asking question that most thought that I was either way off in left-field and that I needed to discipline myself, or that I was trying to find the 'easy' way out, or that I am just ano… I pursued the ideas of transferring to another school, and applying for the Non-Baccalaureate Master's Degree Program here at UNC. I solicited schools such as Leslie College & Governor's College to pilot an undergraduate program and to allow me to be their first guinea pig, and last but not least, I looked into this Interdisciplinary Degree Program. As I am sure you have noticed, I chose to pursue this last option. The reasons behind this choice to pursue this program are really quite simple. The main reason is that I want to stay here, not just in Colorado, but here on campus with those individuals that I have identified, and finish the job I have started. My reasoning behind this is that the need for programs such as this one is becoming increasingly great. When our university has only 38% of its incoming freshmen staying here in Greeley for their entire degree program, something is lacking. Whether those students are dropping out, failing out, or are transferring elsewhere, this establishment of higher education is not making the right moves somewhere." page 2, continues,...
