We truly hope this work encourages more effort towards ensuring #reproducibility & data re-use, in the shoulder #biomechsky.

Share rotation matrices/quaternions when it's possible! We even proposed a checklist to help authors ensure their kinematic data is complete for future use. ✅ (9/11)

We corrected (fixed) or compensated for these deviations wherever possible, aligning data to the ISB standard, having only the euler angle data.

BUT... as scientists, it's honestly sad 😔 that some data still couldn't be perfectly compared... (7/11)

It became a festival of variation! For the thorax, clavicle, scapula, and humerus, we found 8, 8, 11, and 8 different ways of defining local coordinate systems across the datasets. Yes, ELEVEN for the scapula! 🤯

Check Fig 2 in the paper! (6/11)

We had to systematically categorize layers of incompatibility: anatomical landmarks, local coordinate system (orientation/direction/origin), and Euler sequences chosen to try and convert them back to a common standard. 😩

This is where the Spartacus project name made sense to stay strong!

As heavy users of the ISB recommendations (Wu et al. 2005), we assumed that nearly 20 years on, the community would have widely adopted them, making our comparison task straightforward.

... Que nenni! 😅 Reality hit hard. (4/11)

It all began with a question from @FlorentMoissenet:

"What are the best practices for measuring scapulohumeral rhythm free of soft-tissue artifacts?"

We dreamt of easily comparing gold-standard curves from the literature... 💭 #researchjourney #scapulohumeralrhythm (2/11)

🚀 Introducing Spartacus (1/11)

Our review & aggregation of normal shoulder girdle kinematics.

Why? Because understanding 'normal' is vital, but gold-standard data was scattered. Time for a unified view!

I’m satisfied with my new external force API 🤘🏻

It lets the possibility to apply forces in global or local frames, even using virtual points on the model as application sites.

How do you manage external forces in your biomechanics workflows? I’d love to hear your approach!
