Bring on the red flags 🚩🚩🚩🚩
Thinking about this more and man I really think disagreeing with Nancy is an incredible red flag for anti-social behavior. De-atomizing society requires people be both willing to talk to strangers and receptive to strangers talking to them. And it’s so easy to practice this in your daily life.
Unpopular opinion: I know it's cool to wear your earbuds and carry a book while pasting a disinterested, don't-talk-to-me expression on your face, but I like to talk to the person sitting beside me on airplanes. I liked it when we were willing to be inconvenienced by strangers.

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

Wonderful way to start a Sunday. I love the Temeraire series! Naomi Novik is such an excellent writer.

I’m very cautious when it comes to books with only 5* ratings, no matter how many. Too often they are badly edited/unedited self-pub books. You’re not doing anyone any favors by withholding 3* reviews. You’re just changing the threshold and as a consequence destroying the credibility of ratings.
Felt like this needed to be shared.

Arc readers who withhold reviews aren't doing the reading community any favors. You may think it helps the author but there's something weird about books with only 5 star ratings on release date.
If the author asks for negative reviews to be withheld I refuse to work with the author or even read them in general. If I find out anyone withholds negative reviews I don't trust their reviews going forward. Yes positive reviews for arcs help authors but readers rely on arc readers to be truthful

This is a an exemplary history book. The narrator of the audiobook (Peter Noble) is also fantastic.

“A Line in the Sand” is not about a specific event, but about the geopolitics of a region during a defining (and well-chosen) period. Some events read like a thriller…and yet they happened!
Sorry to say you can’t get 25 per cent off but I see @waterstones.bsky.social has declared A Line In The Sand one of their “bucket-list books”, so if you’ve been meaning to read it, now’s the moment

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame.

The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight.

It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Such a shame most of Frank Schätzing’s books haven’t been translated to English. Such an excellent writer.

Things looking up, then? 😬
The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH**

I haven't been on here for so long. But as another writing project reaches its end and a new one begins, lemme just leave this here. Just so that I have the excuse to do my thing, which is continue writing. I mean, nobody cares, but still. At least it's a decent cover, no?😅

Are there no other fantasy romance plot tropes than poor/disabled girl+prince cursed by scorned sorceress? I can think of SO MANY different plotlines. Prince cursed by secretly sorcerous brother. Prince not cursed but transformed in magical accident. Oligarchy of evil mages vs wise women. WHATEVER

Watching the Harry and Megan documentary, and my only observation is this: Harry went to Eton but he can't type with 10 fingers. Do they not teach them because it's assume posh folks will always have menial folk typing for them? Just as they have people for cooking, babysitting, dressing them etc

ADHD-friendly 2024 resolution #3: improve finances

My only way to beat ADHD impulse buys is tell myself I'll think about it and buy it tomorrow. This year, I'll use a new trick: make a list of things I didn't buy and sum up the saved money. This should give me enough dopamine to keep going!

ADHD-friendly 2024 resolution #2: mindful eating

ADHD comes with addiction behaviours and eating disorders, and I'm no exception. Going about things slowly and mindfullly is the only way I know to deal with those. Which also means enough sleep, down time, and no rush.

ADHD-friendly 2024 resolution #1: Take control of the household by doing small tasks.

Making lists and setting goals leads to overwhelm burnout. This year, I'm going to be doing small tasks, one after the other, slow and steady. Lots of breaks, no guilt! Dusting one shelf is a win. This might work!
