A little late for the Marines birthday and Veterans Day but I wanted to make a new home for an old poem.
𝙐𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙙 Dust hangs heavy under the weary Afghan sky, here I sit, my rifle cradled between tired knees, my uniform once crisp, now a canvas of wear and tear, faded by relentless suns, stiff with the salt from my own sweat. The landscape around me is brutally beautiful, ancient mountains stretch skyward, untouched by the hurry of time, while we, fleeting shadows, scar this silence with our fleeting wars. Children’s laughter slices through the hum of distant planes, old men watch us, their eyes brimming with stories they’d pay dearly to forget. I hand out candies, my smile a hollow echo of better times, never quite reaching my eyes. At night, the stars bear silent witness, casting cold light over fields soaked in blood, where poppies flaunt their crimson blooms, bold as the wounds we inflict upon the earth. Every dawn counts the cost friends, foes, the innocents, all smeared into the margins of what we call duty. I wash my hands, trying in vain to cleanse the stains, but war’s shadows are tenacious. Many armies have fallen here, and I wonder if I will be amongst them, name etched into the rugged earth, another ghost haunting this stark wilderness. Home beckons in my dreams a place where the earth does not shake, where the only dust is on the long road leading to the front door of my childhood. Where my mother’s voice isn’t lost amidst the constant roar of conflict. But how do I leave this behind? How can I forget the haunted faces, erase the names of the fallen? How do I return to talk of trivial things when here, every patch of ground is a story of loss? This uniform, it weighs more with each passing day, laden with the unseen, the untold, the unfinished. And I am just one more soul, yearning for a return, to a place that has changed as much as I have. Circa 2017
