This is a amauti my aunt made for my cousin 18 years ago, who now gave it to me to carry my little one in. A baby can sit in the back of one until around 2 years of age. The child can be moved from the back to the front of the parka for feeding etc without even exposing them to the elements.

Christian missionaries banned us from our traditional ᑐᓃᑦ or face tattoos many Inuit like my grandmother were not allowed to have them as these missionaries believed them to be of the devil. Now many of us are reclaiming our culture and having them done.

Without looking it up does anyone know what a “kunik” is ?

Kakiniit Or ᑲᑭᓐᓃᑦ are Inuit Tattoos on the body, tunniit or ᑐᓃᑦ are tattoos on the face. Each hold different meanings, and tell a story that another Inuk by looking at them would know about the person. They were banned in the 19th century by Christian missionaries
