You are not a bad person who is bad for other people.

Nor are you perfect or always the best thing in everyone else's life. You're human. You're a mixed bag, just like me and all the other humans.

Grace over guilt. Just do your best today.

The biggest obstacle to many survivors' recovery-- including mine, often-- is our addiction to the illusion we can "control" sh*t.

Swap out "control" in your vocabulary for "influence"-- then dial back your estimation of what you can realistically influence by about 80%.

Remember: our trauma conditioning can only win if it is successful in keeping us focused on trying to "control" things outside of ourselves, rather than INFLUENCING things INSIDE ourselves.

External "control" is a scam & a trap. Internal INFLUENCE is realistic & sustainable.

"Feel the fear & do it anyway" doesn't man belittle the fear; or "stuff" the fear; or disrespect the part of us holding the fear.

There is nothing shameful about fear. Nothing.

Nothing.

That we're not letting it make our decisions doesn't mean we're denying or disowning it.

You're not making a "choice" to be so reactive-- you're responding to old conditioning. You're literally wired for it. Un-wiring that reactivity takes more than a "realization" or a "decision."

Give it time. Be consistent.

One of Trauma Brain's cleverest tricks is, it gets us to not wanna do the stuff that will help us feel good or function better-- like, you know, feeding ourselves-- because we don't want to feel controlled.

Which, actually, is a hell of a way to control us. Just saying.

Taking a day to veg and recharge and and just f*ckin' BE is not "doing nothing." Many survivors grew up w/ demands on our time & focus & energy that we did not choose-- & as adults we sometimes need to remind ourselves that now WE'RE in charge of using (or not using!) our time.

If it matters to you, it is not a "waste of time." You don't need anybody's validation to make something a worthy investment of your time & focus-- & you definitely don't need your abusers' or bullies' approval, real or imagined, to make an activity or interest valid.

If you wouldn't want your kids saying it to themselves, you have no business saying it to yourself. It doesn't matter if you don't say it out loud-- your kids will perceive & model how you relate to yourself.

(You're not the one survivor who will "fool" your kids. Sorry.)

It's common, as we work our trauma recovery, to get flashes of moments in the past that will make us want to cringe-- & our job in those moments is to forgive & relate to our past self gently & compassionately.

Be ready to love on your past self in those "flashes." Flash love.
