VOIDWALKER is a story about necromancy (but really it is just about driving places and being angsty and gay while doing so)

He moved his eyes back to the road, to the dark swallow of night, but now there was the slip of something else into his mind. He took another look, another sip of the man. Vincent looked peaceful for the first time since he had laid eyes on the witch, and Caleb could not hold back the sting of want in his soul, though for the same peace of slumber or for the witch himself, he could not decode. He beat the leather of the wheel with the edge of his palm and clenched his jaw, foot pressing harder against the gas pedal.

The kidnapper startled even though he was the one holding the weapon. “Should I be thanking you or cursing you?” “Are you the necromancer?” Vincent was finally able to make out the full shape and form of his captor. Where the orange of headlights and the rush of a murderous high had obscured his vision before, now there was clarity. Broken, was Vincent’s first thought, broken beyond repair. Vincent knew what that looked like. This man, though different in flesh and bone, was a deeply unsettling mimicry.

The first chapter of VOIDWALKER has plagued me for over a year now but I think I’m finally getting there.

Hello again, Vincent.

Passage reads: On Vincent Page’s twelfth birthday, his father had delivered a piece of wisdom that he was to keep close, to always remember—Once you’ve seen a dead body, you’ve seen them all. It was supposed to be a comfort, a mantra to calm his nerves, but growing up had made Vincent realize that the remark had been more of a cynical quip than anything else, and that it was certainly not the truth. Death had many different guises, and despite the constant contact, it had never gotten any easier to experience. He had seen slit throats, burnt flesh, broken limbs in positions that made him ache just to think of, poor souls face down in their own vomit. He was knee deep in blood and gore and piss, and the familiarity of it had not created the numbness he had been cruelly promised.
