TIL about the final "intact" Santa Fe 2-8-2 on earth: ATSF 4076. Lost in a flood in the 50's, Santa Fe wrote off the 176 ton locomotive as it disappeared in a flood when the Kaw River burst its banks in Topeka,KS. Recent amateur archaeology rediscovered the tender in the mud, the locomotive attached

...and Phase 3B very much perfected the look. It should just be *The* branding for AMTK, and it never needs to change. We don't need to reinvent crappier things just so they feel new.

It's clean, timeless, and works.
You could put it on Chargers/Airo/Ventures too

Genuinely heartwarming news: the contractor I hired to work on the new workshop wants to model the NdeM/FCP in HO scale too after seeing my layout, which reminded him of his childhood home back near Guadalajara. Model railroading brings people together!

Sometimes: Poorly specc'd paint or poorly applied paint can definitely be judged. Also for instance: UP's mistake to put HUGE flag decals right next to dynamic brake grids, ensuring they burn off is an example of how poor planning nets poor results.

Chat, what are some of the ugliest US/Canadian paint schemes of all time that are NOT a heritage/ one-off unit?

Post examples!

Also units that: weathered/faded terribly

Any ideas what this converted boxcar with little grate sliding doors retrofitted into the sides might have carried?

The usual answer is "wood chips" but I don't think that's true in this case.

Also curious about the bulkhead flat with the removable stack side panels too. Both are very unusual.

This is what executive dysfunction feels like to me.

Also, in retrospect it really has Renee Magritte vibes to it, doesn't it?

I wish someone would make a straight-across remake of "Stunt Island" with contemporary flight sim graphics. Same map, island, missions, get sound-alike voice acting.

It was so incredibly ahead of its time, and I think it could be a much needed skill based non-combat sim with purpose.

The central of new Jersey did a USCG inspired paint job back in the day, looked excellent.
November 11, 2025 at 1:24 AM
Yes, Canadian pacific did a very very creative job. Taking inspiration for actual vehicle painting practices of each branch and applying them to locomotives was a cool move.

Much better than FLAG WRAP+CAMO dogshit we see too often. Have at least *one* ounce of creativity.

A good amt of planning, listening closely to the client about what they want, and then imagine what the layout needs to truly look like a miniature world.

Then make an "absolute minimum" list to tell the story effectively of track/buildings/details and then add stuff slowly back.
