Masaichi Nagata is such an interesting figure in Japanese cinema and in general. It's kind of no wonder he was so successful (and had many failures and shortcomings); it seems the man had his fingers in basically every pie you can imagine at one point or another.

The Japanese actor Toshiaki Nishizawa (西沢利明) was born 90 years ago, on January 20th, 1936. He began as a stage actor in the early 1960s and quickly transitioned to film and, primarily, TV acting. Toshiaki worked up until his death on April 11th, 2013.

Hiroshi Mizutani (水谷浩) was born 120 years ago, on January 17th, 1906. He was one of Kenji Mizoguchi's primary art directors and production designers, but also worked with Hiroshi Shimizu, Yasujirō Ozu, and many others from 1929 until his untimely death on May 16th, 1971.

The Japanese actress Shinobu Chihara (千原しのぶ) was born 95 years ago today, on January 16th, 1931. She had a successful career at Toei throughout the 50s in period dramas, but she did not make the shift to Yakuza films in the 60s. She passed away on November 22nd, 2009.

I couldn't find many pictures of Kazuo Mori (森一生) online, but luckily, he did a series of interviews with Kinejun magazine, and I have those issues, so I scanned some of the pictures from those. Nothing fancy. These might be out there somewhere, but I didn't see them.

The Japanese actress Mieko Kondō (近藤美恵子) was born 90 years ago today, on January 10th, 1936. Her career was short, lasting from 1955 until her retirement after marriage in 1963, but she appeared in over 68 films in that time! She acted alongside stars like Raizō Ichikawa and Shintaro Katsu.

Today marks 120 years since the birth of Japanese actress Teruko Kishi (岸輝子)-- May 1st, 1905 - May 10th, 1990. Co-founder of the incredibly influential Haiyuza Theater Company in 1944 and, in 1962, the New Japan Women's Association.

The legendary Japanese film producer Tomoyuki Tanaka (田中友幸) was born 115 years ago, on April 26th, 1910. A titan of Toho Studios, he produced over 200 films, famously launching Godzilla in 1954. He also produced iconic films for Akira Kurosawa. Tanaka passed away on April 2nd, 1997.

The Japanese Kabuki actor Bandō Tamasaburō V (五代目坂東玉三郎) turns 75 years old today, born on April 25th, 1950. Widely celebrated as the leading onnagata of his generation, he was designated a Living National Treasure in 2012.

Lol looks like you're right. Multiple places have this picture attributed as Shinji Wada (just 1: www.goodreads.com/author/show/...). I do my due diligence but didn't catch this one. Thanks for the heads up. The only other picture I found was this.

The Japananse Mangaka Shinji Wada (和田慎二) was born 75 years ago today, on April 19th, 1950. Best known for revolutionizing shojo manga with his influential series Sukeban Deka. He passed away on July 5th, 2011. #BOTD

Happy 85th birthday to the Japanese actress Mikiko Tsubouchi (坪内ミキ子), born on April 12th, 1940! She is primarily known for her roles in jidaigeki films and TV series, especially her multiple appearances in the Zatoichi films. #botd

Toshirō Ide (井手俊郎) was born 115 years ago, on April 11th, 1910. He debuted as a screenwriter in 1949 with "The Blue Mountains" Part 1 and 2, released just a week apart. Ide became a prolific and celebrated writer. #BOTD

The Japanese actress Yōko Katsuragi (桂木洋子) was born 95 years ago on April 6th, 1930. She debuted in 1948 under director Keisuke Kinoshita and quickly became a staple at Shochiku Studios. She quietly retired in 1963 to focus on family life and passed away in March 2007. #botd

Toshirō Mifune (三船敏郎) needs no introduction. Born on this day 105 years, on April 1st, 1920. Go watch "The Quiet Duel," an overlooked collaboration between Akira Kurosawa and Mifune. Mifune made Kurosawa cry while filming a scene in this film.

The Japanese animator and director Yoshifumi Kondō (近藤 喜文) was born 75 years ago, on March 31st, 1950. A key figure in some of Studio Ghibli's best works, he also directed the widely beloved "Whisper of the Heart." His untimely passing on January 21st, 1998, was a huge loss to the world of anime.

The Japanese actor Kōen Okumura (奥村公延) was born 95 years ago, on March 31st, 1930. Starting his career in 1955, he became a versatile actor in stage, film, and television. He had a crucial role in Jūzō Itami's "The Funeral" as the corpse, earning him the title of "Japan's best corpse actor." #BOTD
