Posted this elsewhere earlier, but I have revisited Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition (a fictionalized retelling of the Wilmington Massacre, published in 1901) so many times since 2016. And it has been speaking to me all day today. America. The same as it ever was.

This is on hold until tomorrow due to a case of food poisoning, but one of my kids and I always bake a cake (not a pie lover, this one, but a very good baker). Spiced pumpkin layer cake with salted caramel cream cheese frosting and homemade caramel sauce.
