You said he chose not to play in the World Series. That is incorrect. He didn't play because he wasn't included on the roster. But unlike the rest of the team that didn't make the roster, he decided to leave.

By my own admittedly arbitrary standards, he doesn't quite make the cut. But my goodness wouldn't I love to see it anyway. The sport needs more guys like him.

That doesn't explain why nobody claimed him.
He had decent results this year but the underlying numbers took a worrying turn. Good news that he stayed in the org so hopefully he can bounce back, but clearly they're looking to upgrade.
