To kick off Black History Month, one of my absolutely favorite works by artist Jacob Lawrence: Sidewalk Drawings, 1943, which underscores the complexity of Lawrence's singular vision in how it links the joy & exuberance of children drawing with difficult subject matter like war & violence

The difficult part is how disability and chronic illness are used as justification for Ai. The community wants and needs it for medical applications, accessibility and early detection.

We don’t want generative Ai. Disabled people need imagination to survive, why would we need it to create?
Flyers and posters at the radiologist’s office (standard checkup) about how they use AI to detect cancer and the (justified) public hysteria around it has me having to remind myself this is the GOOD kind of AI that actually saves lives and is an enormous step forward in medicine and not evil

Remember when the pandemic began and everyone started accommodating remote work? Everyone began showing brand new movies and live concerts streaming? Disabled people had been fighting for this for decades. Now it’s all taken away. It’s not that they can’t accommodate us, they just don’t want to.

Starting to think I may just turn this into a Wayne Thiebaud stan account. Because his paintings can be so, so good - and bonkers at the same time. (Wayne Thiebaud, Dog and Shadow, 2007)

Now, here’s a shot of Saturn in Green+Violet+Ultraviolet false color. Imaged by Voyager 2 in July 1981.

It’s fun processing data from when I was a whiny two-year-old.

Just so you’re aware, every library in LA is offering free masks right now due to the fires. Another reason to love libraries! Let’s hope they continue after the fires are over. Masks save lives in many ways.
