October last year, the "Japan Netherlands Friendship Square" was realised in Rikuzentakata by a crew of Hortus Overzee, Den Helder, and local people. I visited the place in December. The Netherlands Japan Assoc. donated to this project. This spring, the sakura trees bloomed, followed by the tulips.

Good news. Dear to my heart, this place. Just 40mins drive from the family pile in Fukushima. We love the area and always try to spend plenty of time there when we’re at mum’s.
Lake Inawashiro in Fukushima Prefecture has been newly designated as an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention, marking the 54th wetland in the country to be registered.

In a bold move pulling Japan into the 21st century, the National Police Agency is eliminating skirts for the nation's 20K+ female officers from its uniform guidelines. The fashion choice dates back to an era when women on the force were relegated to traffic control.

Japan's Police Get With The Times By Getting Rid of Skirts - Unseen Japan
The move will also remove other small (and silly) gender differences, such as rank insignia being smaller on women's uniforms.

Women are gaining ground in the Japanese workplace. As businesses struggle w/ labor shortages, the number of permanent female employees (正社員) hit a new high this year - the 5th year in a row it set a record & the first time in 21 years regular employees exceeded non-permanent employees.

Had an amazing dinner yesterday at chanko nabe (sumo food, hotpot with loads of meat, fish and veggies) restaurant Wakabayashi in Minami Fukushima. Run by the parents of the two brothers rikishi Wakamotoharu and Wakatakakage.
