“Don’t be scared, puppy,” Alina said as she leaned down so that her face was directly in front of his, their noses almost brushing. “We’re going to make you feel good, won’t we, Mistress?” she turned to look at the other woman, who was watching both of them with an air of authority and condescension. “Of course, darling,” she said, her eyes completely focused on Aleksander. “After his punishment.” Something about the way she was looking at him ignited a burning flame under his skin, even as his eyes widened in fear. What kind of torture did they have in mind for a punishment? “You don’t have to do this,” he said as he struggled against his restraints. “We can work out something.” “Oh, but we do, pet.” The other woman walked over to him and cupped his cheek with a gentle hand; he hated how he had to fight against leaning into the softness of her palm. “As Alina said, we’ll take good care of you, but bad puppies need to be punished first. Otherwise you’ll never learn.” He shook his head. “No, I wasn’t--” His head [flew] back as the woman slapped him hard. He turned back to her, his eyes wide and his cheek stinging. She made a little tsk noise at him, while Alina watched on, [enraptured]. “Good puppies don’t lie, do they?” He could only stare at her in horror, his mind whirling with everything that had happened since he’d woken up in this nightmare. “Do they?” she repeated, her tone stern as she held his chin with a tight, painful grip, her long nails biting into his skin. “No,” he bit out, hating himself a little for giving in. The alternative wasn’t likely a good choice, and perhaps he could wait for her to let down her guard and find an opportunity to escape. “No, what?” she asked again, her fingernails pressing in even harder. He glanced around wildly, unsure what she was looking for. When his gaze landed on Alina, he remembered what she had called the other woman. “No, Mistress.” Despite the reluctance in his tone, she smiled and released his chin. “Good boy,” she said as she stepped back and gestured for Alina to move forward. “Go ahead, darling,” she said, her tone melting into something tender and fond. “He needs to know who he belongs to.” With excited, bouncing steps, Alina moved towards him, something deep red in her hand. Aleksander’s mouth fell open as he realized it was a dog collar. What the fuck? “See, puppy?” Alina asked, cooing at him, her lips stretched wide in a grin. “We got your name on it and everything.” Nausea rose in his throat as he looked at the bone shaped tag on the collar, the name Sasha engraved in plain block lettering.

Soulmates AU 💕

But it’s not real—and you don’t exist and I can’t recall the last time I was kissed —————— Alina’s earliest memories are of Sasha. Mixed in with hazy recollections of her parents smiling and laughing, are much clearer images of Sasha teaching her how to summon her light, so quick to praise her when she gets it. Solnyshka, he calls her, in a voice more familiar than her own. He is only a few years older than she is, and he is her first friend. When she’s little, adults are charmed and amused when she tells them about him. Lots of children have imaginary friends, after all. As time passes, the reactions to her stories are less amused and more judging or concerned. A child of four might be expected to have an imaginary friend, but a child of twelve is certainly too old for such things. She learns to stop mentioning him; it’s fine because he never leaves her, a constant presence in her dreams. By the time she graduates high school and becomes an adult, she has accepted that he’s nothing more than a figment of her imagination. Just a dream man that her mind created. That doesn’t stop her from finding comfort in her memories of him, fabricated though they may be, or from looking forward to bedtime when she knows she’ll see him again. He’s not real, but after years of having him in her mind and in her heart, how can anyone else measure up?

Aleksander is fifty years old when he first hears someone talk of a sun summoner. They are a legend and many believe there never will be such a person, that it is all religious fervor. But the idea that there is someone that could be his balance—the light to his dark—pulls at his heart and he wants fiercely for it to be true. If they ever are to exist, it could be centuries in the future, and there is no guarantee that he would easily cross paths with them. Many grisha hid their powers. What if this sun summoner felt the same need to protect themselves that so many he had met did? Money is scarce, but he buys a small notebook and immediately heads for the small room he is renting and begins to write. Dear Sun Summoner, It feels strange to not be able to address you by name, but I won’t know what to truly call you until you are discovered. I hope that it is not too long, that I won’t be waiting centuries to meet you. But if that is the case, I will happily do it. Grisha are persecuted and hunted simply for having been born and I am trying to make Ravka safe for them. Hopefully by the time you arrive I will have had some success. I don’t want you to know the kind of fear and danger I have experienced. Whatever the world looks like when we meet, know that I will keep you safe. He signs the letter with his name—his true name, no matter how foolish that may be—and puts the notebook in the pocket of his coat closest to his heart. He does not know if a sun summoner will ever exist but he hopes for it. His mother would berate him for that hope, for the love already growing in his heart, but he cannot find it in himself to stop. He swears at that moment that if a sun summoner does exist, that he will keep his promise and do what he must for them to be safe, along with all grisha.
