Rupert leaned back in his chair, smirk fixed on his lips as he took a drag of his cigarette and simply watched the man across from him. This meeting was hardly a surprise, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t revel in the triumph of it either. Declan O’Hara—one of the most pig-headed men Rupert knew as well as the head of the rival O’Hara family—sat in one of the terribly uncomfortable chairs in front of Rupert’s desk, barely managing to keep still, his rage and frustration clear in his expression. It didn’t matter that O’Hara tried to hide it, he was much too easy to read. Declan never would have come to Rupert if he hadn’t been so desperate. Not for anything, but certainly not for this. And if Rupert had nudged certain elements into place to ensure that the O’Hara’s were desperate for this alliance? Well, he’d never claimed to be a good man. He was charming and ruthless and relentless and often greedy, but never good. This time, his greed wasn’t for money or power or territory or anything of the sort, but for a woman. That in and of itself wasn’t so surprising. He was well known for sharing his bed—or couch or closet or counter or wherever was most convenient at the time—with any number of beautiful women. There was something…different about Taggie O’Hara. Something that made him want to keep her. “So,” Rupert drawled as the silence stretched on, thick and charged, “I was thinking a spring wedding would be lovely.”

“Someone’s here to see you, Sasha.” Alina smiles at the caregiver, Fedyor, in thanks as he walks away and leaves her standing by her husband. Sasha smiles up at her, but it’s merely pleasant with no recognition. “Hello.” “Hi. I’m Alina.” She gives a little wave and gestures to the seat across from him. “Can I sit with you?” He nods, his eyes, so dark and so familiar to her, watching as she sits down. She can’t help but drink him in, now that she can only see him once a day. Isn’t it time you moved on? She pushes aside the anger that flares once more in her belly at the memory of Mal’s words—as if she would just abandon her husband because he didn’t always remember her. She promised in sickness and in health and she won’t go back on those vows. Even if their life together no longer looks the way it did—even if the loss of him is sometimes so heart wrenching that it might shatter her into pieces—she is his wife and she doesn’t want anyone else. “Is that your baby?” she asks, nodding at the baby doll cradled so carefully in his arms. He smiles, wide and so much like the man she married, as he drops his eyes to the doll. He nods. “Her name is Katya.” Alina’s heart swells and aches. “I have a daughter named Katya.” He lifts his head to look at her, still smiling. “She must be special.” Alina blinks a few times, trying to push back the tears filling her eyes. “She is.” Their daughter is grown with her own family and living across the country, and Sasha had looked just like that holding her as a baby. “She’s lucky to have someone like you to take care of her,” Alina says, gesturing at the doll in his arms. Sasha nods, but says nothing, instead humming a soft melody, a lullaby that he had often sung to their daughter at bedtime. They sit together like that for several minutes, listening to Sasha hum as he rocks the baby doll and Alina watches, remembers.

Aleksander woke to fingers brushing softly up and down his side, leaving a trail of goosebumps behind. “Good morning, moya tsaritsa.” His voice was rough with disuse and sleep, but Alina’s eyes only darkened at the sound of it. She leaned down to press a nipping kiss to his shoulder. “Good morning, malysh.” He hadn’t been sharing her bed for very long, only a few days, but he hoped the long, unending years ahead of them looked just like this. There was very little he wouldn’t do to keep it. Maybe that made him as much a monster as she was, and certainly his mother didn’t approve, but he had found the other half to his soul. He and Baghra had hidden for so long, avoiding coming under the attention of the immortal and vicious Sol Koroleva. None of it mattered in the end. Aleksander’s place was next to Alina. They were inevitable. “I have something for you,” she said, still caressing his skin. He raised an eyebrow, his lips curving up in a lazy smile. “Oh?” With an answering smile, hers heated and enigmatic, she slipped out of bed not bothering to pull on a robe. He watched as she walked away from him, every gorgeous inch of her on display, thoughts of how they could spend the morning flooding his mind. As she stepped back into the room a moment later, black embroidered, gold corecloth draped over her arm, his eyes widened as he sat up. A kefta, clearly for him, in her color. “Alina…” He reached out to run his fingers over it once she was close enough. The craftsmanship was exquisite, of course, just like his blue Etherialki keftas. It was a certain claim, as was the possessiveness in her eyes. There would be no denying that he was hers. Why would he want to deny it? “Will you wear it?” She asked, holding it out. “Will you be mine?” He took the garment without hesitation. “You know I already am.”
