Holy crap, this is heinous!
Last October, a recruiter for the Royal Canadian Air Force woke up to find herself locked out of her Facebook account. The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of her military status, had been hacked. Soon a picture of a fake employment badge with her face on it appeared on her account – along with the text, “I’m super happy to announce I’m crypto currency certified.” --excerpt from https://www.reuters.com/investigations/meta-is-earning-fortune-deluge-fraudulent-ads-documents-show-2025-11-06/ The recruiter said she immediately filed multiple reports with Meta. As weeks went by without a response, her account began claiming that she had struck it rich with crypto – even acquiring land for a dream home – and she wanted to give her friends the same opportunity. The recruiter said her supervisor tried to get the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to help, but was told that Meta doesn’t usually respond to hacked-account reports from the Mounties. So the recruiter warned her friends not to interact with her account and asked them to report her account to Meta, too. Asked about the incident, the RCMP said it regularly raises reports of abuse on platforms such as Meta, but declined to comment on the specific case. Nothing happened. After about a month, Mike Lavery, a former Canadian army officer who the recruiter had worked with years before, called her. She said she pleaded with friends to continue reporting her rogue account. “Dozens of people reported it, multiple times each,” she said, estimating that Meta received more than 100 reports. By the time Meta finally took her hacked account offline, at least four other military colleagues had been defrauded, she said. Brian Mason, an Edmonton Police investigator, was able to help track C$65,000 of the victims’ stolen funds to Nigeria. Lawyers for Jimenez offered a counter narrative. They said that Jimenez reversed because he was afraid, then was unnecessarily shot in the back of his right shoulder, where a bullet remains lodged. The agents’ actions were “unreasonably aggressive” and a violation of their own policies, said attorney Robert Simon. Jimenez, who lives in the mobile home park along the same road, approached the officers to “tell them that there’s kids that are coming out to wait for the bus,” according to his lawyers. “He was telling them, ‘Excuse me. Federal authorities have painted a different picture of what happened. According to the complaint filed in the Central District of California on Friday, Jimenez pulled up to three immigration officers, two from Border Patrol and another form ICE and “engaged in a verbal altercation,” it states. An ICE agent, identified as E.O., approached Jimenez in his Lexus and told him to leave. Then the agent “holstered” his fire arm and pulled out his pepper spray, according to the complaint. Crime cases in the papers reached such proportions, both in numbers and in space and big type given to them, that the public demanded action. Theodore Roosevelt, as president of the reform Police Board, was seriously embarrassed. He put an end to the crime wave simply by asking Steffens and Riis to lay off. It had all come about simply because the reporters, led by those two, had got into competition as to who could dig up the most burglaries and whatnot. Keyes was from out of state, so you can eliminate any established political base; both candidates were black, so you can factor out racism; and Keyes was plainly, obviously, completely crazy. Batshit crazy. Head-trauma crazy. But 27% of the population of Illinois voted for him. They put party identification, personal prejudice, whatever ahead of rational judgement. Hell, even like 5% of Democrats voted for him. That's crazy behaviour. I think you have to assume a 27% Crazification Factor in any population.

I think about this paragraph when people talk about rising crime at a time when crime has been falling for years. Media sensationalism has created that impression in contradiction to the facts.

scratchisthebest • 6h for the curious: the reason this happened is because someone placed the 2,147,483,647th bookmark on the site. that's the largest ID that can be stored in a typical database column. to fix it they have to migrate the entire database to use a different type for bookmark IDs... except of course this will take a while because there are two Billion Of Them Lol good job guys. you used All the bookmarks. there are no bookmarks left

Variegated yarn is usually dyed in loops, so if you cast on the right number of stitches & knit your project in the round, you can get the colors to line up in attractive ways. Here's a skein of yarn I dyed:

There's some nice pooling going on with my cat bed. I cast a serendipitous number of stitches for the colors to pool nicely instead of splotching like clown barf.
