Very lucky find last night on marketplace, I love Devi Ever fuzzes and I’m always happy to add more to my rigs! Legend of fuzz circa the early 2010s! Not too shabby for $40! Also the guy from My Bloody Valentine apparently had one of these on his live rig? Neat!
It’s a silicone fuzz boutique pedal from the early 2010s. It sounds heavy and strange like a droning synth and fuzz that bitcrush together! Beloved by the My Bloody Valentine community

My current pedalboard is focused for doom/sludge metal, it’s super simple but still hefty! Out of my currently 7ish fuzz pedals I honed it down to two, have a cheap reverb that really acts as a flanger, and a tuner, all on a dedicated board!

I use a small pedalboard that was a gift from a friend after I covered a gig for them, it’s really a meaningful thing because it ties my stuff together and reminds me of a really fantastic night! It’s simple, tight, and easy to transport just how I like it! The main workhorse is the old school boss chromatic tuner, tried and true this thing is just as reliable as it was 20 years ago haha! Next is a copy of a malekko spring reverb, I found out about it from a 60 cycle him video and for $35 it does the job, adds a little headroom but truly with it cranked it makes a pretty good bass phase/flange tone that I use to add depth to my sound! Finally my pride and joy, the FUZZ ! I run these two in tandem as they are the best bass fuzzes I have currently and they do two very specific jobs! I’ve focused my ear in on fuzz and over the years I have tried many different pedals, that said where I currently am for the bass is first and foremost a big muff. The fuzzlord MF-4 hit a very specific need for me with it being a louder and more customized big muff with a lot more scoop and essentially an eq knob added so you can optimize it specifically for bass. It is rich, harmonic, and heavy in all the right places while having the definition to both run individual notes and big bass chords! Also I got the special edition Dracula release with bats all etched into the pedal it’s pretty rad! Honestly everything guzzlers does is rad and I want more stuff from them! The last pedal is both sentimental and serves a very specific purpose, my Devi ever 90. I got this years ago, one of my first pedals I ever got, got it with a Hyperion and for years devis pedals were unfindable. She is still my favorite pedal maker, the queen of fuzz and a totally rad trans pedal maker her fuzzes are louder and meaner than anything I’ve found. The 90 is harsh, it’s painful, it’s a Velcro fuzz from hell and it’s perfect for when I want to cut through for a piercing lead tone!

Close up pic, she’s got a good yellowing to the lacquer giving it a perfectly rich color, and has neat little features that are ear specific such as the above the body grounding wire from the bridge pickup to the bridge itself as well as the era correct extra strap button on the back of the headstock. Though I prefer flatwounds this bass came set up with rounds, and at this point I don’t know if I’ll change from that because it just sounds so good and aggressive! I wanted to add a bridge cover and pickup cover but at this point in person it’s perfect as is, this is my dream instrument Very rarely I play live though I’m planning to change that but of course I take this bass out when I do, she’s too good to stay at home her whole life lol

I’ve still got baby pictures from when I found this bass on reverb, it was the first time I’ve ever made a big purchase sight unseen, but I’m really happy with it. I wanted an instrument that was as old as me so I could age with it, and this was it. There’s gonna be more in the alt text lol
I love this picture and I gotta say she’s just as pretty in person honestly! So basically how this came to be was my grandma who I cared a lot about passed suddenly in 2020, we still don’t know what happened she kept her medical issues very secret but we knew she had been sick for a long time. When she passed she left each grandkid a little money to be split evenly, not a lot basically a months rent but that doesn’t matter. What matters was though I could have spent that money on bills and probably saved myself a bit of a headache finance wise what I decided instead was to get some I would use that I could think about her every time I played it, and this was the ticket. All my uncles and cousins on her side are guitar players, and though I play guitar too no one else plays bass, so I wanted something of her to take with me when we play together at family gatherings. It gave me an excuse to get exactly what got me as well, got in right before used gear prices skyrocketed, and though I had always borrowed people’s jazz basses for gigs I knew it was time I got one myself. The slim neck is fast, the fretboard is buttery, it has vintage spec small fret wire and I like it that way it’s precise and articulate. It’s as close as I’ll ever get to a real 62 Jazz but with this I don’t feel guilty playing the hell out of it! This bass truly means the world to me. As mentioned previously here’s a curious 62 spec with an extra strap button on the back of the headstock, back when they figured upright players would want to transition to electric bass lol. Also with this bass it’s a made in Japan, a distinction from later years is specifically the “made” part. Pre 1996 I believe all fender Japan instruments were made at the fujigen factory (was once the leader in making top quality fender copies in the 70s, recruited in the 80s to lead japans made in Japan fenders, and once they were making better instruments in the 90s than fender America they switched to a lesser favorite to take up the Japan fender lines, the distinction later is it saying “crafted in Japan” instead. Early made in Japan is the best there is besides vintage. Also now the Fujigen factory is ESPs custom shop lol so says a lot, it’s a QUALITY bass best I’ve played.

The next bass in the lineup is my most recent get! After playing a live show and borrowing a friends squier bronco I realized I need something like it, something loose that handles well up the neck. For me that’s the markbass, love the color love the neck it’s a great short scale bass!
I’m obsessed with the yellow and black aesthetic of this and frankly yall if you get an instrument you should love looking at it just as much as playing IMO! Because it’s short scale it feels super slinky and loose compared to my jazz, and it handles chords well while making little intricate things past the 12th fret a whole lot easier! The only things I’d do to this is probably slap a different set of strings on it and maybe put a hot rails pickup in it eventually anything else will be purely cosmetic but I love modding so much don’t be surprised if I change out all the chrome parts for black eventually lol Also since the yellow was a special Edition color they also did a matching headstock which I love! These are meant to be beginner basses/entry level but it’s a good tool and I feel with a couple little upgrades down the line this will hold up to any pro level bass for years to come! It’s gonna make a good arrow in my quiver for sure!

I feel like this is such a stereotypical bass to have but this one has a fun story. One of my old jobs was next to a guitar center and one day this popped in, I like it and brought my old bass that I hated for trade, got $80 for trade and paid $50 out of pocket went home with this! Story in alt lol
So it’s an early 2000s epiphone thunderbird bass, bolt on neck, stock everything, muddy and heavy as fuck but I love it! Neck dive isn’t as bad when you wear it high like john entwhistle lol! I did hate the way it sounded for a while, it wasn’t great but then I tossed flats on it and now I get the hype, you gotta run flats on these things lol they just sound right! I don’t take this one out Much because admittedly it’s heavy as hell but its genuinely fun to play and the shape of the pickup covers make perfect thumb rests its Surprising good in the hand! Funny story about this one too, since it was next to my work I remember bringing in my bass to trade in for it and taking a half day because I was so excited to play it. When I did the same day there was a terrible terrible storm, it flooded all the highway underpasses from where I worked to home and it fucked up our state for DAYS! Usually my drive home was 40 minutes but that day finding routes home, avoiding flooded roads, following police swat cars that were taking the right roads to help rescue people That were stranded, it took me seven hours to make it home lol. The whole time I had the bass strapped into the passenger seat as I white knuckled my drive home lol. I was ready to abandon my Car and sling the bass on my head and wade my way home if needed lol, I’m glad I got this weird tuxedo black bass!

Final bass is my project, the tinker toy. Also a bass that reflects my sona in a way lol. It’s a pj bass that’s been done from the ground up to be exactly what I desired and see how far I could take it lol. It was a squier and while it can’t match a custom ship it does pretttty well for itself!
It started off as a squier affinity pj bass I got as a project after liking my jazz bass too much to actually want ti modify it at all! It’s been fully stripped, refinished in a full nitro finish because I always wanted to see how that felt, it’s my fave fender color, Sherwood green metallic, and it’s got a heavily tinted nitro lacquer over it all, headstock as well! Replaced the bridge with a brass saddle bridge, added a rosewood thumb rest, vintage style tortoise pickguard, upgraded the internals with a custom gunstreet wiring harness where instead of blend I had it have a three way switch, volume and tone. It’s got a fender hot 75 bridge pickup and a set of the Iron Maiden Steve Harris p pickups that in tandem both RIP! Flatwound strings, gotoh lollipop tuners (my fave looking tuners lol) as well as a weathered nitro neck with sanded and oiled neck in my playing range it feel like butter and I love it! The matching headstock I did I also had a custom period style decal made just for this bass, I wanted to give it a name of a famous historic dragon but nothing felt right, but when I realized that the spear that Saint George used to slay the dragon was called a “draconic standard” I knew that was what this deserved. It’s a sonic weapon and in a way it’s the dragons revenge lol now used to wreak doomy havoc where it roams! The back could use some Work but I swear the neck feels amazing and I’m not the only one that agrees I’ve had many people play it and love it! I did all the relic work myself and it looks, love it or leave it relic work is my thing and it’s my bass at the end of the day haha

Today I wanna talk about BASSES I wanna talk about AMPS and I wanna talk about EFFECTS!! I’m a big nerd for gear and this is my current at home rig that I sometimes take out lol

This is one of my big passions, I’ve played instruments my whole life, and though art is my main focus, music has always been a creative escape. I first picked up bass in middle school, in a weird twist of fate our friend group had too many drummers and we needed someone to learn bass and through pure grit and willpower I strong armed myself into the instrument. Flash forward almost 20 years and it is the only instrument I still feel at home with lol. This is my main rig that fits the sounds I currently want to make! The ampeg svt is basically what I want to hear, the only other heads I would want is a peavy from the 70s or an acoustic, the same model that John Paul jones used lol. I inherited the mesa boogie head after a friend of my fathers that I was close with passed away and though I rarely use it I love it! It’s a very rare tube head that’s fully rack mounted, has stickers from his old bands on it, and strangely enough it’s the head another one of my bass idols, cliff burton, used! Finally the rig ends with a no name 1x15 speaker cab that I got on the cheap for like $40. It sounds good but it’s the one thing I would def change out, I really want an acoustic hybrid full stack cab with a 1x15 and 4x10 (give things the zeppelin feel) but more realistically I will just get an additional 4x10 cab. I play with a lot of fuzz and distortion and though the 1x15 cab does the job I know 10” speakers would tighten up a lot of the glib that I’m getting and help round out the distorted tones I’m chiseling away at!
