At the same time, there's something to unpack in the way that a largely transfem scene is received by Queer Culture At Large. Think TESCREAL.

I feel like a lot of postrat/ah+ came out of 'computer nerdery as an escape hatch from maleness', which I can only sort of relate to. 2.0 should include more approaches to gender.

I did like The Counselor; it was a modern Grimm's fairy tale. The prophesied weapon, the princess turned into diamonds.

99 Homes is like a PG-13 version of The Counselor. Not as weird, but it has Michael Shannon, who makes any movie better.

The conservative view of e.g. Cormac McCarthy: if you try to change human nature, it'll do some vague metaphysical harm. It's impossible, because reasons, and you'd better not try.

I haven't seen anything else by this director (Jerzy Skolimowski). Maybe I'll like Deep End more.

I like the premise (synth musician vs. aboriginal sound magic? rad) and some of the shots of creating foley effects. But it never got crazy enough. After all the wait, the big payoff is a Chewbacca roar.

It could be seen as indulging in the exploitation it criticizes. But the focus on exploitation makes it unusual, and for a 'head movie', subversive. Easy Rider is about using and dealing; Ciao! is about being used and dealt-to.

The way it blurs fiction and real life can make it hard to watch at times. Edie Sedgwick was a creative force in this movie; she's also fresh out of rehab, and playing herself with the serial numbers barely filed off.

Parts of Ciao! are visually beautiful, with psychedelic editing and scene transitions (those opening titles!). Warbling Moogs and treated voices add to the disorienting effect.

The narrative is fractured and psychotic. Stories of abuse, addiction, and illness are punctuated by a rambling conspiracy theory about UFOs, delivered in a gee-whiz tone; space-age optimism meets post-sixties burnout.

As a kid I would've loved this.

(I still love it, but back then I would've too)

I went to the spa at an off hour, two weeks after my XBB shot. Partly to ease my decrepit body, partly out of curiosity. The bigger reason was to overcome my fear.
