And now is a good time to support PBS.

Apparently this was a full co-production between Nova (out of Boston's WGBH) and BBC Studios. Not only is the series excellent, this kind of collaboration between the Beeb and an American public broadcaster gives me hope.

I hate to burst your bubble, but they were called to attention. When you're at attention you don't clap. You can hear them being called to attention here:

What's depressing is that if you take any two of those categories and combine them, you get back over 50% approval. Like, "male" plus "white" or "high school" and "65+", or "some college" plus "male". Tens of millions of Americans look at what's happening and think: "yep, he's doing a good job."

I must have watched a very different Hunt for Red October. I don't have the best memory, but I definitely would have remembered a scene where the conquistador is spotted through a periscope in the process of burning his ships.

I'm currently watching Evangelion. What a masterpiece. To pick one tiny example: the way they use insect sounds. It both allows them to slow down the pace of those outdoor scenes, while also conveying the feeling of a hot summer.

I can't say if I've ever heard a Taylor Swift song. Maybe I have, but at the moment I can't name a single song of hers, let alone a lyric. I'm not even intentionally avoiding them. It seems to me that her style is "pop songs for young girls" and that's just not interesting to me.

I get the hypocrisy, but there's an element of truth to that. Especially in cases where reporters camp out on some family's lawn because a relative of theirs did something horrible.

Probably impossible to achieve, but, I think the ideal outcome would be that they realize they were in the "Leopards Eating People's Faces" party.

If you could convince them that they ad been duped, and that everyone warned them, maybe you could convince them to sit out all future elections.

It seems to me that a big element of his personality is his ability to invent a justification for anything he wants to do. What he wants to do is be Batman. So, I can see him letting his cynical side out, saying both sides are corrupt, and voting for the one that will give Bruce Wayne a tax break.
August 5, 2025 at 2:26 AM
He's firmly in the "I personally need a huge tax cut so that I can spend even more money coming up with gadgets to fight crime" camp. So, he'd vote Trump. He'd also be voting as his alter ego Bruce Wayne, and everyone would expect Wayne to vote Trump.

Once Draper's in the MAGA filter bubble, can he get out? On one hand, he's a clever guy and familiar with propaganda and media manipulation. On the other hand, he's an unfrozen cave man in terms of 2020s media literacy.
August 5, 2025 at 12:29 AM
Or are we talking 40ish year old Don Draper time travels forward 70ish years? I think even a progressive guy from the 60s might initially have real troubles adapting to the 2020s. And, Don Draper was hardly a hippy. I could easily see him getting onboard with "Make America Great Again"

People are thinking "if they knew what I know..." But, I can easily imagine Hank Hill and his neighbours all becoming huge Fox News addicts and believing their lies.

As for Don Draper, are we imagining he's alive today at 100ish? If so, he's probably in a nursing home and has Fox News on 24/7.

Not as satisfying as skateboarding, roller blading/skating, or even biking. Small wheels and no shocks mean you normally feel every little ripple. New stuff like this is glorious.

He's Australian so he's had laksa before. But, maybe that will mean he's more likely to think he can handle an authentic Malaysian laksa... Personally, my big issue with the Malaysian style laksa wasn't the spice, it was how salty and fishy it was.

If anybody accused / being investigated were automatically withdrawn from selection, wouldn't that be chaos? Or do you have to weigh the plausibility of the accusations.

But, then, isn't that just a trial before the trial? Even a trial before the person's even charged? 4/4

@gunnerblog.bsky.social suggested maybe the Premier League should have guidance / rules. If they did, what would be the trigger for a club to not play a player: conviction? Sure. Charged. Maybe. Under investigation? That doesn't sound workable. 3/4
July 8, 2025 at 5:05 AM
This isn't "innocent until proven guilty", it's more "not assumed to be guilty until at the very least charged".

Say the MET had instead dropped the charges. Should the club have welcomed him with open arms? Or is he still presumed guilty even if the legal system disagrees? 2/4
July 8, 2025 at 5:05 AM
I might be in the minority, but I don't think the club made a mistake in handling the Partey situation.

IMO, the club doing anything before a player is even charged with something means they would be acting too early. 1/4

No budget means outdated and broken equipment. Vermin infestations. Plumbing and electrical issues. But, most of all, hiring the cheapest possible staff. Hiring people who couldn't get any other job. Guards who have the required cruelty to be cops, but not the competence to pass the test.

People think the DMV / RMV is bad. That's government service for regular people. Imagine how much worse it is for SNAP / food stamps or welfare. Now imagine what happens when the "clients" are prisoners. As long as prisoners aren't escaping, they'll squeeze every cent possible from the budget.
