I agree completely. Military recruitment propaganda can be very compelling, but how many kids would still enlist if they also heard from members of Veterans for Peace or some similar group

It’s been a while since I read it, but it didn’t take long flipping through to find this horrifying quote:

Good question, beats me!

Sure, but there will always be bad actors, especially when there is economic incentive involved. So, I think it’s important to think about if it’s even possible to protect our data from those bad actors on this platform

I am not justifying data scraping for AI in any way. I am just saying that what bsky has explicitly done is make tech over which no one has absolute control. By using bsky, we are putting our data on a public network that anyone can access

Like theoretically, anybody wanting to scrape data for AI could just make their own app and do whatever they want with bsky data anyway

Again, grain of salt here, but I think even if you self-host, you still have to connect (federate) with the whole “Atmosphere” to engage with it. This is different from apps like mastodon, where data is shared in collective, federated servers that can completely sever from others if they so choose.

I could be wrong, but I think the issue is the AT protocol that Bluesky is built upon is such that the app actually can’t do anything about this. Everything we do is forever public, existing in a system of connected repositories that bsky or any app built on the protocol accesses on its own terms.
